The post I was responding to mentioned a $35K difference.  At $70, you are starting to talk about real money for both sides.

I realized you were talking about a 35K difference.  It was just something that sorta humored me.

From Jim Callis BA chat today:

Navin (Pasadena, CA): How good a chance do the Cubs have of signing either Maples or Dunston?

Jim Callis: I'm hearing they'll get Dunston done. Maples will be the tougher sign.

I'm pretty surprised about Dunston, but that's great news if Callis is right.  I guess the Cubs did do some good homework on Dunston's signability after all.

Vanderbilt doesn't lose very many baseball recruits, so that has to be a pretty big disappointment for them.

I loved Shawon Dunston and will be quite happy if they sign his son.

But if I had to choose only one or the other, I would prefer maples.

Hopefully, they will sign both.  But in spite of Callis's comment, there is still a good chance we will sign neither.

I heard from another source today that the rumor that the Cubs have already agreed to terms with Vogelbach is spreading around the league.

I stress the word RUMOR, because it comes from a source that is NOT inside the Cub organization.  The same source says that there are two other first-ten choices that have already agreed to terms but have not been approved by the league.

If Larry Bud is trying to keep signing bonuses in line, why doesn't he just insist that they be kept secret until after August 15th? It seems unfair to prospects who could have reported to camp in June or early July to have to wait for weeks or months, thus losing important development time.

I admit Dunston seems like a longshot prospect to me.  A pretty fast dancer, I got that.  But all of the scouting reports I thought seemed to suggest that he couldn't hit, and that even if he could he won't be fast enough to steal and any hopes of being strong enough for power are projection rather than present.

I realize that projection is the game, and the Cubs have routinely paid good money to guys who thought might eventually learn to hit in the projected future.

But does anybody recall from the scouting what there is about Dunston that makes him at all worthy of significant dollars or being an exciting or meaningful prospect?  I actually don't recall.

BA said Dunston was a "key recruit" for Vanderbilt, and he was BA's 59th highest ranked high school prospect coming into the season and Perfect Game's 48th highest ranked high school player.  I don't think a "key recruit" for Vanderbilt or someone that highly ranked in the high school class would be totally without some hitting potential, although it probably is raw like you said.

Perfect Game said Dunston was 6'2" and only 165 pounds.  It seriously sounds like this guy would need to go into Camp Colvin right away, but getting some pounds on him might help him hit the ball with more authority.

This sounds like one of those deals where the Cubs will have to overpay to bring him in.  I can't imagine him walking away from Vandy for less than a seven figure bonus.

I'd rather have Maples as well, of the two...

If he wants to go to Vandy, let him go to Vandy.  But I don't honestly see why he'd be a 7-figure type prospect.

If he's the 59th HS guy going into the season, the 59th best HS prospect might be the 100th best prospect or whatever overall, given that there are JC and college prospects too.  Should the #100 or #120 guy get 7 figures?  Maybe if he's sold on Vandy and you want him anyway, you pay 7 figures.  But that would seem like a pretty massive Huseby-esque overpay.

Second, being the 59th HS/~100th overall guy going into the season is one thing, being the 59th/~100th coming out is another.  From what I read, he had a disappointing spring.  So I assume there are another 59HS/~100 overall guys who probably passed him up.

So if he's the 118th/~200th best guy in the draft, is that a 7-figures guy?

My guess is that if he signs, it will be more in the $400-750K range than the 7-figure range.  And that it will still be a pretty extensive overpay at that.

BA now shows 13th rounder Trey Martin, a Georgia HS outfielder, has signed.  No bonus listed.

He should be able to help us win 3 in a row.

If Dunston signs, I would guess it will be in the 500 thousand range.  If they give Vogelbach 1.6 million, I doubt that they would give Dunston even half of that.

Of course, I haven't seen their internal scouting reports, and those from BA and others are rather sketchy, and often out of date or incomplete.

Regardless, I liked Shawon Sr. and I would like to see them sign Shawon Jr.  It isn't like it is MY money they are spending.

Damb, I would make a good congressman.

By the way, I also felt the same about signing Bobby Bond's son.  We can always dream that Jr's career will follow the same path.

Rumors are getting stronger that Gretzky has signed with the Cubs.

RUMORS is the operative term.

I hear he's already into flaxseed oil.
