Dunston's agent must be from the Scott Borass school of negotiation.

I think you mean "adviser."

I don't think I have heard a single comment or rumor about the negotiations with Baez.  That seems unusually quiet for a first round selection.

Lindgren says he's going to school.  I'd been pretty interested in him.

This is the time when everything starts to solidify.  I suspect that most teams have fallback players that they will sign if someone else doesn't sign as hoped.

Another colossal failure by Hendry and Wilken.

From Craig's link on Lindgren:

“Mississippi State is on the rise and I feel like we can win a College World Series,” Lindgren said. “I wanted to be a part of a team like that.”

Lindgren was a 12th round selection by the Chicago Cubs.

Sounds as if the "Cub tradition" (of being a crap team) did not really appeal to him.

Mighty understandable if you ask me.

If I were a high school draftee picked by the Cubs, that might weigh very heavily in deciding whether to accept an offer or go to college.  Not just the prospect of signing with a team which has a long history of sukitude, and which is truly crap at the moment, but also one which has a pretty poor track record of developing talent.

Mississippi State has a pretty decent tradition as well...

I know nothing about Mississippi State's tradition, but if that program has Lindgren seriously talking about winning a College World Series and he has a serious desire to win, the prospect of playing for the Cubs might turn his stomach.

Quote from: BleacherNation

Speaking of kids the Cubs feel they just have to have, top prep pitcher Dillon Maples, drafted by the Cubs in the 14th round (though he was a first round talent), has been enrolled at summer school at UNC since mid-June, which can’t help the Cubs’ chances. I can only imagine how much money you would have had to throw at me to get me to give up college after being there for a couple months. At least it’s summer school, and most of the co-eds won’t be there. Also helpful? Football coach Butch Davis was canned, and Maples was supposed to be a kicker on the team (in addition to pitching for the baseball team). I’m still hopeful.

Jes- you and everyone on here knows that you'd jump to join the Cubs organization or any other for that matter, if they offered you enough money. End of story-these kids don't give a rat's ass which organization it is...just show them the money

I wouldn't go so far as to say the selecting organization has NO impact on the draftee.  But it probably ranks down there with things like "my grandmother is a Yankee fan" or "my college roommate might be a hot girl".

davep- you are correct. but if they offer you enough money, the problems you have with the organization seem not to be as important

Yes, if you show ENOUGH money.  Just as was the case when the Cubs signed Soriano.  If you are talking about a HS kid who is weighing college versus going pro, and you think the team makes no difference, when they can very easily re-enter the draft, after developing in college for two years, and possibly getting an even bigger payday, I think you are mistaken.

It probably ranks down there with things like "my grandmother is a Yankee fan" or "my college roommate might be a hot girl".

The prospect of having a hot girl for the college ROOMMATE might quite clearly tip the scales.
