This is from a local article on an upcoming NCAA regional tournament

New composite bats designed to make college baseball safer have taken much of the offense out of college baseball.

So how much slack do you give a highly thought of prospect if his numbers are down from last year?

Look at the overall stats for the conferences using the new bats, norm them, determine the difference between last year and this year, and make the corresponding adjustments to the stats of the given player you are looking at.  Not perfect, but should be pretty close.

I shouldn't say Starling is absolutluy going to get drafted by KC if he is still there. I have been told by guys that follow KC area athletics that there is a lot of pressure to take him.

Some mock drafts have had Starling going to the Mariners at #2.

If that happens and Pittsburgh takes a pitcher, I wonder how far Rendon would fall.

BA draft chat with Jim Callis:

Quote
Dan (Lansing): Do you think there is any chance Tim Wilken takes Bubba Starlin @ 9 if he's still on the board for the Cubs?

Jim Callis: Huge chance. The Cubs would jump on Starling at 9

The more I've read about Starling the more I've come to like the idea of the Cubs taking him.

But I would rather they take a college hitter or pitcher.

The one thing I really dislike about him is that with Boras representing him, and based on some of Starling's comments, it appears rather unlikely that he will sign quickly enough to play anywhere this season, meaning his development will be delayed, perhaps by a full season.  That doesn't bother me much with young arms, which can easily end up overworked, but it does bother with position players, particularly those who appear to need further development of their hitting mechanics or pitch recognition.

I really hope we don't take Starling.  Tom will confused walking through the stands talking to fans not knowing if they're talking about Starlin or Starling.

Somebody could confuse Starling and Byrd too.

Starling sounds a lot preferable to Springer.  I think I'd prefer a possible K-king is to a multi-year proven K-king.

As far as pitchers go, I'd be ecstatic if we re-drafted Sonny Gray...

You'd need Gray's permission to do so.  He'd have to be a dope to grant it.
