If he hits 72 home runs for the Cubs in a year, he can bathe in it if he wants to.

According to Tony Gwynn (San Diego State's coach) Gretzky signed.

Apparently, there are pretty strong rumors that Dillon Maples and the Cubs are close to an agreement or may have already come to terms.

26th-rounder Michael Jensen is also in the fold:

Quote
Former Salinas High and Hartnell College pitcher Michael Jensen is a Chicago Cub.
The right-hander is giving up his scholarship to USC, having signed today with the Cubs.
Jensen compiled a 2.00 earned run average last spring for Hartnell, showcasing a fastball in the low 90's.

From Jim Callis chat today:

dylan (ks): where do the cubs stand with vogelbach & maples?

Jim Callis: Rumors persists in the industry that Vogelbach is done or all but done. He was asking for $1.65 million before the draft, and if the Cubs give him that much, it won't get announced until Aug. 15. I keep hearing the Cubs will go overslot for 9-10 guys at the top of the draft, but it's unclear whether that group will include Maples.

Details on Michael Jensen's contract:

Quote
Two weeks before the signing period for drafted players is up, the Cubs locked up the right-handed Jensen with a six-figure signing bonus.

"The offer was extremely good for the round I was drafted in,'' Jensen said. "My school is still paid for. My dream is to play professional baseball. If I had stayed in college, my focus would have been baseball.''

Drafted in the 26th round by the Cubs, Jensen received a signing bonus (figures were not released) similar to what much higher drafted players are offered.

"I was told the signing bonus was comparable to what a fourth round pick receives,'' said the 6-foot-1, 185-pound 20-year-old. "Most 26 round picks don't get this kind of bonus.''

....

A year ago at this time Jensen didn't envision being drafted. In fact, he didn't see himself pitching beyond Hartnell College until his fastball jumped 7 mph to 95 on the radar gun in the fall.

"I picked up some velocity,'' said Jensen, who was consistent last spring between 91 and 93 mph. "That's when I started getting attention from colleges.''

By the spring, numerous professional scouts were holding radar guns behind home plate when Jensen pitched.

"The Cubs scout always showed the most interest,'' Jensen said. "I wasn't surprised that Chicago still drafted me.''

A starter most of his prep and college career, Jensen has been compared to current Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster and former Cubs ace Mark Pryor.

"I have never tried to compare myself to anyone,'' Jensen said. "Greg Maddux is someone I would like to meet. He had great command of his pitches.''

Relying primarily on a fastball and two-seamer, Jensen developed a curve that buckled knees this past spring. He'd like to add another pitch to his arsenal.

"I'm going to play baseball full time,'' Jensen said. "I'll fiddle around with the ball and try and develop a slider.

Jensen isn't sure if he'll continue to be a starter or be moved to the bullpen for the Cubs.

"What ever role is fine with me,'' Jensen said. "I would prefer to remain a starter. But I'm fine with being a reliever. My goal is to see myself in the majors in three to five years."

I hope Maddux does talk to Jensen, and tells him to develop his changeup before working on a slider.

Does anyone think that the North Carolina NCAA investigation will help the Cubs sign Dillon Maples, if they haven't already?

One of the articles says that he will join Mesa in 4 days and then go to Boise in September.

Since the league ends play before August ends, he must be going just to look for a winter job shoveling snow.

About 6 more big names to go.

If the Cubs can get 4 of them, it'll probably be considered a good haul.

Someone at NSBB posted a couple of short videos of Garrett Schecht and (to me) he looks like pre-2010 Tyler Colvin only with a better, smoother-looking swing.
