If I had to do the first 4 rounds of the draft today...

1. Louis Nix DT Notre Dame

2. Deone Buchanan S Washington St

3. Jimmy Garropolo QB Eastern Illinois

4. Cassius Marsh DE  UCLA

Adding Nix to a line with a healthy Henry Melton would be formidable. Having Nate Collins and Stephen Paea as the second rotation would provide nice depth.

Buchanan could come in and start today. Dion Bailey from USC would be a possibility in round 2 as well.

The only position we really need on offense is insurance against Cutler not being re-signed/franchise tagged.
McCown is talking retirement, which is somewhat surprising. In either case, we really should be looking at a draft solution that allows for the possibility of losing at least one of the two, which is likely to occur, especially in McCown's case.

I think Wooton needs to move outside. I wouldn't complain if he displaces Peppers. Maybe it's just me, but Wooton seems to be in the backfield more consistently. Marsh has been a pretty consistent performer for UCLA. If he replaces McLellin, I'm fine with that too, just think Peppers' bloated salary is a better target for removal at this point.

I think Nix will be gone before we pick... even if we lose Sunday.

He would be a great addition though. But if he's gone then maybe that Hageman stud will still be available.

It's too bad we can't draft a DC...  cause if we inexplicably keep Tucker any talent we do bring in will just go to waste. For example, Jon Bostic has Luke Kuechly-level talent but is having nowhere near the impact Kuechly did as a rookie because he is getting nothing in the way of coaching.

I can't agree about Kuechly and Bostic. Kuechly was one of the best LB propsects in recent history.
Graded out as a 91 at the combine, compared to a 62 for Bostic.

Hard to say if Tucker is a good DC or not. He's gone an entire season without our Pro Bowl DT, a HOF MLB, a Pro Bowl SLB, an aging and diminished star DE, and more than a few games without our best CB.

This day of reckoning was coming for our defense. It's been exacerbated by Melton's absence. No question defense has to be a priority in the draft. Get Melton back and get some young talent drafted/signed. Maybe by second half of 2014 season we'll have a more clear verdict on Tucker.

Thing about Tucker is there's just not been a lick of improvement from ANY of the players on that side of the ball. IN fact, they seem to be getting worse, if that were possible. I just don't know how you justify keeping him, as bad as that defense has been. I just cannot see it.....they repeatedly keep making the same mistakes.

Yup. The young guys are not improving under Tucker, and the old guys don't seem to want to play for him.

Not sure what kind of coach our D needs to get its mojo back, but Tucker ain't it.

We should be above the Pack. I think the Lions pick before us

We pick at 14. Higher than I thought we would and hopefully in prime position to get RaShede Hageman as the cornerstone of a DL that needs to be almost completely rebuilt.

The bad news is our schedule came out today and it is brutal. Road games at Carolina, at San Fran and at New England, just for starters.

Any word on Melton? I hope he enjoyed his Tag money.

Interesting that we pick 14 when we beat Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Dallas.  It must be based on Conference record, which we only had 4 wins...

14 might get us Nix but I have this really bad feeling even if we switch DCs we are gonna be sticking with undersized D-Linemen in some variation of a Cover-2 4-3. I hope I am wrong on that.

While Nix may be heavier, I worry about his surgery repair of his knee. I think that could shorten his career and cause a problem. I'd rather select somebody different. We'll see where Nix is at come combine time

I don't even think head to head is taken into consideration for the tie breakers in the draft.  It is record first then the tie breaker for ties is opponents winning percentage.  That is what is in the ().  The lower the percentage the higher your pick.  In the case of Baltimore and Dallas both having an opponents winning percentage of .484 that pick in the first will be determined by a coin toss and they will flip flop after each round if my memory serves me right.
