Several recent scouting reports I've read have Jernigan falling to the 2nd round because of his size and the fact that while he does everything well, is coachable and has good technique, he is not a clearly elite game changer in either pass or run scenarios. He might be a guy worth trading up for in the 2nd a la Jeffery, but as a mid 1st rounder he feels like a reach.

If we're going to spend a Top 15-20 pick on a defensive player we really need to avoid another McClellin and get a guy this time who will make a significant difference on our D from Day One. Whether that's a DL, LB or DB makes me no diff but he has to be damn good right out of the gate.

Somebody that I personally would be keeping eye on is Dominique Easley from UF.  He had season ending surgery on ACL and MCL….which will obviously make him fall a lot farther than his skill set and potential.  He is 6'2" 282.  He started career at DE and switched to DT for Gators.  He would be perfect Tampa 2 DT or a good DE for a 3-4 D.  It would be similar to the Wooten pick.  Don't expect a whole lot from him next season but talented player whom you probably could get in 4th round.

I agree yapper that Jernigan could slide into the 2nd because of his size, not his talent. The guy is listed as 6'2" 298lbs. He's not a prototypical NT or 3/4 DE so that eliminates many teams from the get go. I think he'd be perfect for our scheme and has the game tape to prove it.

I could see a possible trade down scenario in the 1st with one of the top 5 teams who passed on a QB with their first selection. If by some chance a Manziel,Carr or Hundley were to slip we might be able to parlay that into a 2nd and 3rd this year and a high pick next year.

I would definitely raise an eyebrow if we continued drafting small guys at DT. That formula has not been working for us. I also think it's a little risky projecting picks based on our scheme because the scheme has failed in epic fashion this year. The inherent weaknesses of a finesse based D that Lovie was able to mask with a crazy amount of takeaways, have emerged full-blown under Tucker. A radical scheme re-do is in order and that may require players with a different skill set than we are all used to.

That being said, this will be Emery's 2nd draft using his staff and his evaluation system, which seem a lot more legit than the dartboard approach Angelo took and have yielded us 4 starters this season (Bostic and Greene by default, but still). If he can find more Alshons and less McClellins production wise, then I guess the players' measurables are secondary.

Ok, this is not about the 2014 but about the 2012 draft.  Mike and Mike on ESPN radio interviewed BMarshall this morning and we're also talking about Alshon Jeffery.  Mike Greenburg, a big Jet fan, mentioned that the Jets could have had Jefferey but instead took a different WR 2 picks before.

Remember Stephen Hill from Georgia Tech?

He had the same attributes of Megatron except he catches the ball like Devin Hester.

I know I was high on Hill and I thought the Bears may have been also.  Sometimes we overestimate speed/size in evaluating college talent.

And didn't Emery trade up to get Alshon?

yeah, AJ was a great pick. Kind of like the year we got Forte, great pick for a 2nd rounder.
Hopefully we can get that kind of production out of Bostic and McClellin.

I was on board with wanting Hill as well. But Jets fans hate him because all his physical skills have translated to zero production although in fairness, with those QBs they have and their system it's gonna be hard for any WR to shine.

Jeffery... I was pretty stoked when we picked him because I had seen him dominate the SEC 2 years prior. I had followed SoCarolina enough to know their QB situation was a total disaster, plus the injury to Marcus Lattimore had that whole team under a cloud for Jeffery's final year. I was NOT thrilled that he would be working with Daryl Drake but thank God that was only for 1 year. I wasnt sure about adding the extra draft pick to trade up (a 5th IIRC) but in retrospect it would have been worth our 2nd round pick that year AND last year to get him.

I didn't follow Jeffery in college but I did see him in a bowl game against Nebraska.  I was rooting for a local boy who was playing halfback for the Huskers and noticed that Jeffery looked like a man among boys.  Then he gets himself thrown out of the game.

So I kind of knew why he was slipping in the draft...bad attitude and was apparently gaining some weight.

Not the same guy now that's for sure.

The impact of Marshall's mentoring as well as finally having a legit WR coach and scheme, can hardly be overstated but yet strangely isnt getting much mention.

Plus the fact he is a stud.  I want a #17 jersey for Christmas.  ;)

I would love to read the reaction to the Jeffrey pick again.  I am sure it was interesting...

Even the skeptics were a lot more on board with the Jeffery pick than the McClellin pick. I remember that for sure.

And then the inexplicably bad picks in the 3rd and 4th. But that's for another day.

Except for that extremely beautiful sacking and eliminating of Rodgers this year, I see nothing from McClellin that says let's keep the kid. Seems he's taking the John Thierry/Alonzo Spellman route...tons of potential, unrealized....

He could end up like Alex Brown...a 6 or 7 sack a year guy.  Problem is Brown was only a 4th round pick - expectations and patience for a first rounder are not the same.
