Sixth rounder Chad Hockin pitched yesterday in Eugene, bypassing any innings in Mesa.

He pitched one inning, striking out two and a pop up.  If he can keep that up for the rest of his career, he should be in good shape.

I don't know.... staying in Eugene for the rest of his career might not do a whole lot for his earnings.

Delvin Zinn signed for $100,000 even.

24 picks signed. Today was deadline.

Zinn was #233 on BA pre-draft rankings.

According to Baseball America, the 5'10" Zinn is a premium athlete who has the athleticism to stick at SS assuming he becomes more consistent in the field as he posted a 0.899 fielding average last year at a Mississippi CC.  His bat is more questionable as he has 5-8 HR potential and 0.240-0.250 average potential - at best.  He was also drafted by the Cubs last year.

If those are actually seen as his ceilings, it appears the Cubs are willing to pay 100K for organizational fill.

Not Cubs draft but lowest bonus in first 10 rounds was Padres 9th round pick Jesse Scholtens, RHP from Wright State U.

Scholtens got a $1,000 bonus.

Unfortunately, while at the formal signing, Scholtens' car was ticketed and towed for parking near a fire hydrant, so his net bonus is down to $610. However, Padres have agreed to provide a uniform, cleats, and cap at no charge to him.

All clubs this draft--every guy drafted in first 10 rounds signed, except two guys. Lot of pre -draft deals and understandings, presumably.

What were the rounds for the two that didn't?  Surprised there were any, really.

Seems weird that a team would spend a pick on a guy without a verbal agreement.

I suppose maybe teams sometimes take guys they really like, guys who say they want more, in the expectation that they'll settle for what you can give?

You seem to be looking only at the teams as the source of lack of agreement.  We are talking about young men here.  I am honestly surprised there were so few instances out of 300 young men where there was no agreement.  I would have expected at more than that many young men who simply changed their minds and adopted absolutely unrealistic estimations of their own worth.

I agree.  I am surprised at the low number.  Not only do young men (and probably General Mangers) change their minds, but also it would be almost impossible to reach an "agreement" with everyone that a team might select in the first ten rounds.  And even then, it could only be a general "idea" what it would take to sign a player.

But there is quite a lot of pressure on the clubs to sign their first 10 picks, since they lose the slot money for the pick.  And a college junior runs the risk of having even less leverage as a senior.  Probably the greatest danger is with high school players, and probably most clubs would not draft one unless they were fairly sure that they could reach an agreement.  In many cases, the area scout has known the kid and his family for years, and has a pretty good understanding of what it would take.

All it takes is a new girlfriend or another friend to get a prospect's ear and tell him he really is better than the scouts or the drafting team think....

First round sandwich pick and 7th rounder.  Previous high of unsigned guys was six.  In 2011, it was 28 under the old system that ignored slotting recommendations.
