I kinda like it.   
1.  Rightly or wrongly, it reflects how much Kantro loved the potential.  Who am I to second guess? 
2.  I'd also wondered whether the delay might involve some health stuff.  Like, had his Cubs physical flashed some red flags?  That Kantro spent every last thousand suggests nothing unexpected to worry about there. 
3.  I still don't get what the delay was.  Kantro had $1.4 to spend, what's to discuss?  Was Kantro really trying to hold $100K back to overslot some non-drafted kid? 
4.  Or was Wiggins really considering going back to school, being true to his mates, and taking another shot at the first round next summer? 
5.  If so, I admit I kinda like that too.  He wouldn't consider walking away from $1+ and going back into next year's draft unless his doctor thinks he'll be able to pitch next college season.

There have been reports in the past that the Cubs will reach an agreement with a prospective draftee to give him XX dollars, plus anything they have left over after signing everyone else.  it looks like this was the situation here.  They might have said to him "we will give you slot plus whatever is left on the table after we sign everyone else.  We estimate that will be around XX dollars, but can not be certain.  Of course, this requires a lot of trust on both sides, but these teams spend literally years cultivating these kids, and have a feel for who can be trusted.

This might have been an easy one for the Cubs to use that strategy because, if he refused to sign at the last minute, they just lose the slot money and have everyone else signed.  Next year they get a replacement draft slot with it's replacement slot money.

Wiggins signed for slot that was 10 spots higher than he was drafted. Very close to #58 slot. Wiggins was #68.

So, would think there was some flexibility there depending on what Cubs had remaining to pay from bonus pool. Glad they got it done.
