Chris Coghlan signs a minor league deal with the Cubs, worth $800K if he makes the team.

He has played a little third base (8 games at the MLB level last year; 9 games in the minors) and is a career .279/.344/.410 hitter against RHP.  I guess if he can handle third vs. RHP, that could move Valbuena to 2B and get Barney out of the lineup.  But most of his experience is in the OF...and as bad as the current OF looks, I think he's still probably the Cubs' fifth outfielder.

I know this will come as a disappointment to a number of people here, but barring something unexpected Darwin Barney is going to be the opening day 2B for the Cubs.  They are going to give him a chance to redeem himself after his terrible offensive production last season.  Maybe he'll justify their confidence, or maybe he won't.  But for a while at least, everybody should get used to the idea of Barney as the regular 2B for at least a little longer.

Sorry to be a pest, but could be the ABTY talk go in the Hot Stove topic?  This might be just me, but I still think that's the best place for stuff like that.
