The Vikings must have real serious doubts about their ability to attract a veteran QB (e.g., McNabb, Kolb, Carson Palmer, etc.) in FA and/or execute a trade for same.
If they had any confidence in that route at all, they would have passed on the QB position in the first round, taken Fairley (or possibly Amakamura) and gone from there. Maybe they like their odds better with having Ponder on the roster now in the event the lockout is re-instated and they have to wait weeks or months to pursue trades/FA.
Definitely some unconventional (or irrational, depending on your point of view) thinking behind that Ponder pick to be sure.
