I think it probably means that they are happy with some of his starts, and would rather not lose him when he goes through waivers again.

Yeah, he might have looked too good today.

It's not just waivers. Richard must give permission to be optioned (or outrighted). And, unlike, say, Wada, he doesn't have a sizeable contract that is an impediment for him to walk away. If somebody else has a major league opening for him, could decline an option and walk away.

So, a bit tricky with him.

Guessing that Richard (and his agent) need a day or two to see what, if anything, is out there for him.

If another major league job out there, Cubs will have to decide whether to keep him on 25-man, keep or dump Soriano, or go with a three-man bench, as today. Or, something else.

Cubs have treated him fairly, I think, so likely he will accept option if only alternative is minors. That would be best outcome.
