Bryant with the Cubs' 3rd infield hit of the night, Almora scores.

Rizzo hits into another DP. He's had a rough night amid all the offense.

Not sure a couple years ago when there was so much issue with no-walks for Almora and Baez, that I would have ever imagined them being the Cubs leadoff and #2 hitters.

Hope Happ likes Des Moines.

I hope they do send him down.  It might help him get back on track, and he is probably not going to get much playing time if Schwarber continues his hitting.  And Almora and even Heyward have been looking better.

Justin Wilson can't get anyone out in the 9th.

Good night for Almora, but I'm still skeptical that he'll hit enough against RHP to be in the lineup every day. I do think it's time to give him the opportunity for a while.

Hard to believe how badly Justin Wilson has collapsed since coming to the Cubs. Not sure why Maddon even went to him in a 12 run game--just let the mop-up guy they called up today to replace Butler finish it off.

Baez in 62 ABs: 14 Ks, 13 extra-base hits.

Who would have predicted that the Cubs would have a better record than the Dodgers, Nationals and Yankees, but would be in 4th place in the NL Central

Some good teams are starting off very poorly.

Wilson ends it on a K.  I'm sure Maddon figured this was a low-pressure situation with a 12-run lead, and might be a low-stress inning to rebuild some confidence.

br, you note, "I'm still skeptical that he'll hit enough against RHP to be in the lineup every day," and that's reasonable.  We'll see.  But somebody's got to play center field against RHP.  Until/unless Happ gets things turned around, not sure Almora's going to need to hit all that much to stay in the lineup pretty often.  Jacob Hanneman isn't putting on any pressure down at Iowa.  (He's hitting .138).

The Royals are 3-14; they may become willing to sell pretty early.  If Happ doesn't get things going at some point, the bench is too short to ideally have anybody who's an automatic out and who you're unwilling to use.  May not be that unrealistic at some point to trade for somebody like John Jay:  wouldn't exactly cost a star prospect, but could give you professional AB's.  But hopefully Happ gets into a better place and can start to produce good AB's at some point.

Leave Jay in KC.

Almora is fine.  Happ will at some point remeber how to hit balls in the strike zone.

There's still no evidence Almora can consistently hit RHP.  Sure, ride the hot hand and maybe he proves he can.  But sending Happ down now would be way, way premature.

When the score was 15-4 there was a graphic saying that was the most runs the Cubs have scored against the Rockies since August 10, 2002.  That was the Sammy Sosa 3 homer game where Don Baylor pulled him before he had a chance to hit a 4th.

No.  I think the Cubs will have spells where they are good with RISP and where they are bad with RISP.  Like every other team in baseball.  I thinking harping on it is stupid.

Rational thinking has no real place in the Today's Game topic.
