IBB to Sogard might be the stupidest managerial move ever.
Think only downside of walking Sogard there is chance of a walk or HBP forcing in winning run.
Otherwise, the key is setting up a force at home instead of a tag out—-which typically is at least five feet of baserunning distance—-or more. And, this is Baez running who has the moves. Maybe the last guy in the NL you want to have to tag at home as the winning run.
And, then there’s setting up chance of a double play too of course, which gets you out of the inning.
Further, Sogard is harder to K than Heyward. If Sogard hits a grounder, you have a tag play of Baez at home—not a force.
Finally, if you can get past Heyward, Happ is up and Happ has been lost at the plate for some time. Mets probably not too worried about Happ getting a hit off 99 with two outs.
If you think Diaz can avoid walk/HBP, Mets played it the right way I think, even if didn’t work out for them.
