Nice win.
*Fun to have Happ with a couple of HR's, his average is now up to .200.
*Bote at .200, too.
*Steele looked really good, he was throwing his curve for strikes.  Bummer that he pulled something. Too bad his sac bunt wasn't better, then he'd not have needed to hang out on the bases.
*Hoerner is really good defensively.
*Cubs bullpen has been really good.  Kimbrel is fun to watch when he's throwing strikes.

The more I see of Hoerner, the more I am reminded of Kenny Hubbs, both defensively and offensively.  Like Baez, he makes more than his share of spectacular plays, but unlike Baez, he seldom seems to screw up the ordinary ones.

Still a very small sample size, but he has been impressive.

With Hoerner, Steele and Nance, that is three new guys that it looks like it will be fun to follow.

How did four inning Williams beat out anyone with two arms for a rotation start?  This guy is better than Alec Mills?

Davep, there are only 5 or 6 guys on this board who ever saw Hubbs play.  But I agree with you.  Kid, stay away from airplanes.

Very few ever win a Gold Glove in their second year.  I also remember him as diving for the balls, something Cubs players seldom bothered to do.

I like the way he becomes a hitter when he’s up to bat, if he gets on base he becomes a base runner, on defense he becomes a fielder, strikes out some but not much.

Kenny Hubbs was a terrific defensive second baseman (as is Hoerner).  But Hoerner seems to have the potential to be a far superior offensive player.

Keep in mind that Hubbs played his final season at age 21.

Hoerner just turned 24.

Really hard to project what kind of offense Hubbs might have shown a few seasons later.

Dave, Hubbs won his gold glove his rookie season—-only had a cup of coffee year before when age 19.

I’ve mentioned this a few times here before, sorry, but got a chance to meet and talk with Hubbs and some of his family in 1963. They drove to Dodger Stadium from the family home and I was an autograph hound when I was 13 and was there hours before the game for autographs with nobody else in sight except me and my pal. Had plenty of time and talked a bit. Really devastated me when heard about his plane going down but kind of cemented me as a Cubs fan going forward.

Probably, although Hubbs was considered to have substantial offensive potential at the time.  Of course, offense was looked on differently at the time.  Hubbs was roundly criticized for his large number of strike outs at the time.

When I said only 5 guys on here would have seen Hubbs play, I was thinking me, Davep, P2, Bennett, and Reb.    Good guesses.

55 pitches through 5 innings for Hendricks, Cubs lead 2-1. He's got a chance to go all the way tonight. Cubs need to add at least a couple runs so that it isn't necessary to go to a pinch hitter at some point, though.
