Rizzo whiffs on a bad pitch and Baez flies out to end the inning.

Keegan Thompson pitches a scoreless eighth, and the Cubs are coming up for their last chance to tie it.

With the Cubs down to their last out, Hoerner hits a very weak grounder that sits right on the foul line, veers foul by a millimeter or two, then appears to have just its edge back on the line at the instant Arenado grabs it; it is called fair.

Huge opportunity for Martini here; if he fails, the game is over.

Bottom of the fourth, 0-0.  Bader hits a seeing-eye double right over the third-base bag, and the next batter hits a liner to second that Hoerner ranges back for, grabs, and throws to second to double Bader off.  It saves a run as Edmundo Sosa hits another double, this time to the right side.

Edman is put on with a semi-intentional walk to get to Wainwright, who is a good-hitting pitcher; Davies was trying to walk him the entire time but one of the outside pitches was called a strike.

The umpire is only 30 years old.  He was a high school freshman when Wainwright and Molina broke into MLB.  He's been fooled by Molina's framing all night and that's what Ross was bitc hing about and got tossed.

Don’t think it’s really framing. Ump just doesn’t know the strike zone very well.

I really, really hate the concept of catcher framing.  I can't wait for electronic strike zones to send it to history's dustbin.

I agree.  At this point in his career, the umpire isn't very good when it comes to the strike zone.

Dave and Reb, I agree, but Ross got tossed because those close pitches were being stolen.
See if it's mentioned postgame.

Cards have runners on first and second with nobody out and Wainwright is staying in to hit for himself.

Nance is being lifted and Tepera will be the new pitcher.
