Maybe the MLB highlights will replay the Pittsburgh announcers and how they called the play.  That ought to be fun.

Scroll down a bit on the link.

Cubs lead 4-2 after 6.     David Bednar in to pitch for the Pirates.

One of the amazing things is that FOUR Pirates messed up on the play.

1. 3B starts the festivities with a poor throw. 2. 1B obviously for being a knucklehead. 3. Catcher for bothering with runner at home, failing to just tag Javy instead, and failing to make a better throw back to 1B. 4. 2B for being late to cover 1B after the play at the plate. Maybe add the pitcher as messing up for failing to punch out the rest of his infield at some point.

If the catcher had merely tagged Baez at the plate after Contreras scored, would that have nullified the run?  Certainly, tagging first base would have, but would the same thing apply if he had been tagged after home plate was crossed?  I doubt that the rule ever took that into consideration, but it would depend upon the exact wording of the rule.

Thanks, Reb.  That's great.   I think Javy has a way of taunting the other team so they forget their fundamentals.  Javy started jogging back toward home just slow enough to tease Craig to chase him.

Perez homers for the Pirates to make it 4-3 Cubs after seven.

Tag Baez, and the inning is over. No runs scored.

20+ Pirates messed up. All of them should have been yelling.

He’s hard to tag, that Baez, doesn’t like to be tagged, c’mon and try to tag me, he says.

Yes, tagging Baez is treated the same as a force at the bag. He’s still a forced runner and the run does not count, as the third out is a forceout.

I think similar things can happen in other, non-baseball contexts too.

Think of anybody doing something so creative or unorthodox—-other folks sometimes react in unpredictable ways too, foolishly, or inspired, or unorthodox in their own way. Not so easy to be level-headed around a character like Javy doing his thing.

Wow, that was really a terrific save for Tepera.  Two K's and three routine grounders, even though Javy errored one of them.  Threw about one chase ball, otherwise seemed like he was 0-1, 0-2 on everybody.  No drama entering bases-loaded 8th, just threw strikes.  And no drama after the leadoff error in the 9th.  Really nice outing.

Tepera and Winkler were both really good today, and have been their past few outings...

Nice analysis of the "Baez" play.  It points out that a key part of the play was the failed pickoff that allowed Willson Contreras to reach second.

They also point out that the 1B at one point obstructed Javy when he tried to reverse course and head back to first.

Winkler has been terrific lately, but not today.

Went up 0-2 on leadoff hitter and then walked him. Gave up a cheap hit but lucked out when hitter tried to advance and was tagged out. Then walked another guy and then hit a batter, loading the bases with two outs. Tepera came in and got the third out.

Winkler’s stuff moves like crazy but, from time to time, struggles to throw strikes, as today.
