Baez/Hoerner/Alcantara could give the Cubs some pretty awesome middle-infield defense.

I just hope Hoyer isn't fooled by small sample size and decides Baez and KB are expendable.  Of course, I'm not impressed with Hoyer by himself so far.

Watching replays of the collision on MLBN...

Pham left the field on his own, and looked pissed off doing so. Mouthing the entire time, and he looked like he and former Diamond Jaxx and Iowa Cubs manager Bobby Dickerson (who is now Padres bench coach) had words, and pretty much had to be held apart.

Bigger crowds now, and likely harder to hear on-field interactions...both guys were probably calling it, and didn’t hear each other...

Alcantara's minor league numbers are... not great. Would be shocked if any GM viewed him as more than a good defensive backup.

Wisdom has always had great power, but he's got a near .700 ISO and a +.550 BABIP. Those numbers are going to come waaaaaaaaaaaay down, and once they do, *maybe* he looks like Bote 2.0. I'd be thrilled (and shocked) by that outcome.

In reality, not sure if Wisdom's defense matches Bote's, and his plate discipline is not as good. The upside for Wisdom is his FB-rate is much higher than Bote.

Wisdom has become Mrs. CurtOne's favorite.  Besides, "he's a hunk."

For some reason, my wife is still in love with Ivan DeJesus because he had good legs.  At least she isn't fickle.

In the few ABs I have observed, I have been quite impressed with the pitch recognition by Wisdom.  Perhaps that has been fluky but I would keep an open mind about him.

I certainly think there's a better chance Wisdom is a legit big league player than Alcantara.

Not a huge deal, but why burn Winkler for 2 innings and 30+ pitches with a 5-run lead?  Plenty of options - including Maples, who seems well outside the circle of trust despite pitching quite well on the whole.

Yes, very likely.  He's not going to hit HR's, so OPS will never be a thing.  Still, as a batting-average/OBP guy, maybe he'll be OK?  He hit .284, .266, and .271 at age 19-20-21, mostly in full-season already at 19, hitting .271 at age 21 in AA.  Age 22 was worse, but still .346 OBP.

So maybe with two years of added strength and filling out some physically, maybe he's a little stronger and improved some from age 22?  He was a .344-OBP guy in the minors as a young-for-age guy.  So I could imagine him hypothetically ideally becoming a .275/.340 BA/OBP guy?  Maybe a super-Sogard but with a lot more defense?

The filled out version of Alcantara reminds me a little bit of a young Starlin Castro.

He's definitely a lot sturdier looking than I was expecting.

Through a stroke of luck, around noon today I got a call from an old friend inviting me to go the game with him today.  Great to be back at Wrigley. I was surprised how normal it seemed.  While there were a number of people wearing masks, seemed like most fans were not.  No social distancing. Given all that, not sure how limiting attendance to 25,000 accomplishes much.  And I take covid-19 very seriously.

What a fun game to watch. Strange, but the Cubs looked like a potential championship team (w/ Bryant and Contreras on the bench, and Heyward, Hoerner, Duffy,Bote, Marisnick, and Romine on IL), while the Padres looked like the Cubs were supposed to look this season. Baseball certainly is an unpredictable game.  Alzolay and the bullpen looked especially good. Rizzo was Rizzo and Alzolay was fun to watch, at the plate, on the bases and in the field.
