But then walks the 8 hitter on 4 pitches to force Ross to go to Kimbrel.

Kimbrel is summoned with the bases loaded to get the final out... and he gets it on a grounder to Wisdom at third.  Cubs win and take the first two games of the series.

Cards led yesterday 5-1, and ended up losing 8-5. Cubs led 5-1 today, and ended up winning 7-2. That’s a pretty fun couple of days of Cubs-Cards at Wrigley.

Megill pitched Kimbrel into a save situation.

Ross rarely uses Maples to protect a lead. Would have been a surprise if he pitched the 9th tonight.

In 17 appearances this season, Cubs have lost 14. In other words, Ross uses him when Cubs are trailing, not winning.

In the three Cubs wins Maples pitched, two were big Cubs blowout leads. The third games was in a close double-header game when Ross basically had little choice.

Megill, on the other hand, pitched in a similar situation his last major league outing before he went on the IL——5-run Cubs lead and pitched the 8th inning.

Very interesting that Ross seems to prefer Megill, at least up to today. Guessing that Maples is a front office thing, not a Ross guy. They are scared he will put it all together elsewhere, so have found a roster spot as the 9th reliever.

And why not?  Maples looks terrific at times.

Megill has very good stuff too. Not tonight, but looked good in previous outings and looked great in spring training.

Looks like Cubs are going to have a “bullpen game” this week in next few games, so will see how things shake out.

The Cubs have had an incredible bullpen run.  But *IF* they stay in the playoff mix so that Hoyer feels like buying, I wouldn't actually rule out the value of adding another good reliever.  With all the innings they need to cover, another guy who'd be trustworthy and usable would not go to waste.  And *IF* they want to stay good, you don't want all your good relievers to be fried by September.

Clearly no trust in Maples whatsoever and likely never will be.

Chafin coming in to pitch.  His mustache goes perfectly with the all-blue uniform:

He probably will get all humble but Davep's grandson is the third one in the backrow

Jordan Bastian

Javy tried to chase down this fly ball in the 9th Saturday night. When he headed back to the field, kept flexing and looking at hand for much of the rest of the inning.

When I was growing up in Sacramento, Elk Grove was a dink town about ten miles southeast of the city.  Most of the kids were ranch kids and from the vineyards.  I'm not even sure they had sports teams they were so small.    In twenty years they became HUGE.  Today, they are almost the biggest suburb of Sacramento.
