Ross rarely uses Maples to protect a lead. Would have been a surprise if he pitched the 9th tonight.
In 17 appearances this season, Cubs have lost 14. In other words, Ross uses him when Cubs are trailing, not winning.
In the three Cubs wins Maples pitched, two were big Cubs blowout leads. The third games was in a close double-header game when Ross basically had little choice.
Megill, on the other hand, pitched in a similar situation his last major league outing before he went on the IL——5-run Cubs lead and pitched the 8th inning.
Very interesting that Ross seems to prefer Megill, at least up to today. Guessing that Maples is a front office thing, not a Ross guy. They are scared he will put it all together elsewhere, so have found a roster spot as the 9th reliever.
And why not? Maples looks terrific at times.
Megill has very good stuff too. Not tonight, but looked good in previous outings and looked great in spring training.
Looks like Cubs are going to have a “bullpen game” this week in next few games, so will see how things shake out.
