"For me, I think I have some selective memory, too.  If a guy gets picked off or thrown out on the bases but they score 5 runs and win anyway, I'm not sure I remember those baserunning outs that much, I remember the run-scoring plays instead.  But when getting shut out, I tend to remember the pickoffs and failed run-and-hits.  "

I agree, Craig.  And I think the players, humans, also find those failures more vividly.  Baez baserunning error last night had nothing to do with the loss, but try convincing him of that.

Quote
Báez didn’t necessarily agree with Ross’ assessment that he’s been distracted: “I’m perfectly fine.” Báez said he was surprised by the decision, but ultimately respects the manager’s authority.  “He saw one thing, I saw another thing,” Báez said.

From Mooney article in Athletic.  I didn't hear the actual interview, so hopefully he's pulling out comments out of context.

"He saw one thing, I saw another thing."  Not sure I get what's to see?

Mooney's article didn't include any quotes from Baez acknowledging/apologizing/regretting that he did a bad thing.  No repentance expressed.

I assume from a player's perspective, you obviously made a mistake, everybody watching saw it and knew it.  It's obvious I wasn't paying attention and I did something dumb, do I need to say something so obvious?

Baez did say the following:

“I can’t go against him,” Báez said. “I blame it on myself. I lost count of the outs. We talked about it. We’re on the same page. I’ll be there tomorrow to help the team.”

Somebody (Boog?) thought Ross may have been upset will Javy also not running 100% on his way around second.   Has there been any discussion of that today?

It was the Cleveland PBP guy who thought Javy might not have been running hard enough.

Soooo, he wasn't running hard enough when he shouldn't have been running at all.   Sheesh

I guess there’s always going to be an element of Cubs fandom who are uncomfortable about Cubs winning baseball games. Even in June when Cubs are tied for first place!

Out of 100 baseball fans who think this way, perhaps 90 are Cubs fans.

Probably a legacy of the “lovable losers” legacy.

That legacy is over. if you’re a Cubs fan, let me suggest that you actually root for Cubs to win games when Cubs are in a pennant race. But, to each his own.

I’m not uncomfortable when they’re winning games. And I root for them when I get to watch (or listen).  But, I also find myself a little conflicted about it, as I feel more Buildican then Nowacrat about this particular team, and if we do fall out of it, I’d love to restock the depleted farm a bit with some of our soon-to-be free agents, and our perhaps overachieving and definitely overworked bullpen.

That’s all.

To each his (or her) own.

Hendricks retires the side in order in the first.  A good sign for him.

Baez strikes out to end the inning and to make up for his mental illness yesterday.

I get it that everybody roots in their own way. Personal matter.

But, there’s something Cublike about being “conflicted” about maybe winning isn’t the best thing in the current season circumstances.

I live in D.C. and it would never occur to even the most sophisticated Nats fan that maybe it would be a good thing if the Nats lose enough in June and July so they can trade Max Scherzer. Folks would be dumbfounded by that notion. If they stink in late-July, then okay about that but conflicted about winning too much in June? No.

A fair # of Cubs fans think losing in June and July is good unless the club is a favorite to win the pennant. I think it’s kind of a pathology of sorts that you don’t see with fans of any other club, at least to the extent of Cubs fans.

A curious thing. Not really being critical because, yes, rooting is personal. Just an observation.

Pederson, with that short “e” just comes through big time with a two run double in the gap.

I was lamenting us not getting more runs in the sixth with two men on and no outs, but fortunately Willson and Wisdom are helping us pull away.  7-2 in the eighth.

I don't see anyone rooting for the Cubs to lose in June and July.  I see several people that feel that the Cubs do not a team good enough this year that no matter what happens in June and July, they should not allow their assets to leave with little return, and face a future even worse than is currently likely to be.  Most are rooting for them to win every day, while hoping that they do not make stupid personnel decisions based upon an extreme long shot.

We know, Dave, Cubs could be in first place on July 31 and you’re trading away Bryant, Baez, etc. because trying to win—-even in those circumstances—-would be a “stupid personnel decision.”

Only Cubs fans with a lot of Cubs history baggage would take that point of view. No other club in baseball has fans with that perspective.
