Runners at first and second and Morel makes a perfect sacrifice bunt to move then each up one base.

Then a grounder to Bae at second who throws home to nail Higgins at the plate.

But with two outs and runners at first and third, Quiroz puts a ball in the left field corner to get the lead run in!

Bote follows with the third out, but the Cubs lead 6-5 going to the bottom of the eighth.  Quiroz has his first two major league RBI today.

Michael Chavis is 0 for his last 16, and he keeps it going with a timely 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Cubs still lead by one, going to the ninth.

Velazquez tries to steal second and does some great dodging to evade a tag but is called out.  It looks like he clearly evaded it, and if his fingers came off the bag after the tag, it was the infielder pushing his arm off.

They're reviewing it, and they overturn it and call him safe.  Good review.

Pirates get out of the inning with a strikeout.  Bottom of the ninth; Erich Uelmen is coming in to try to save it.  It would be his first-ever major league save if he can get it.

Bae gets his first major league hit and Uelmen can't stop throwing over to first.

Oneil Cruz is up and it feels like Uelmen is in a pickle even though it's just one baserunner.  Now a mound visit.

And Cruz hits a very long fly ball to left that Happ tracks down.  Two outs for Bryan Reynolds, who homered last time up.  Please don't do it again.

...and he won't, because Bae has stolen second and they're walking Reynolds.

This will be a pretty exciting game no matter how it turns out.

Uelmen is looking pretty nervous out there.  He walks Castro to load the bases.

Cal Mitchell coming up to try to walk things off for the Pirates.  Come on, Uelmen.

Uelmen is all over the place but Mitchell is swinging at bad pitches.  He almost goes for one but Laz Diaz says no swing.

Count is 2-2.  ...and Uelmen finally finds the plate, and blows it past Uelmen to end the game!  Cubs win!

Brandon Hughes throws five pitches to one hitter and earns a save.  The Cubs were up 8-3 and the Pirates had the bases loaded with two outs.

Does it seem like Hughes pitches pretty much every day?

It does, but the reality is different.

Given that Ross likes to use Hughes when we're ahead, I'm happy to see him in the game so often.

All the rule changes in baseball you'd think they'd do something about calling runners out who pop off 2nd after being safe.

They really need to do something about this.  I'd propose having the airspace a few inches above the base be considered to still be part of the base once you've touched the base for the first time.  Having to maintain continuous contact with it while sliding is just crazy.

Cubs grab a 2-1 lead as Happ legs out an infield single and comes in to score on a Gomes double.

Stroman is in line for the win now, and comes out of the game in favor of Hughes. 7 innings, 97 pitches.  I'm surprised he only has 4 wins this year; it feels like he should have more.

And Hughes works around a walk to Schwarber with a 5-4-3 double play, something the Cubs have been getting a lot of tonight.  Really good solid infield defense.
