Bryce Harper leads off the ninth with a single, and Rodriguez is being summoned to replace Hughes.

I would have liked to see Hughes go for the two-inning save, but Ross has made his decision.  Nobody out, man at first for the Phillies in the ninth inning.

The grounders continue: one to shortstop that is almost a double play, but Realmuto beats it out at first.

Then Bohm hits one to second and this time they turn the 4-6-3 DP to end the game.  Cubs win!

All the rule changes in baseball you'd think they'd do something about calling runners out who pop off 2nd after being safe.

Hardly anybody really likes this development under replay but the problem is how to write a rule that can distinguish between sliding off the bag--the way runners have been called out for over 100 years--and being off the bag for a second, today.  Off the bag is off the bag.  How do you draft a rule that works as before?  It's not just "above the base" but all sides of the base.  In some cases, even in the old days, the runner might be blatantly above the base and should be called out.

Think it would have been done, as few like what's going on, but nobody has come up with a way to draft a rule that makes sense.  Maybe somebody will.  Hold a contest.

I think when baserunner a hits the bag play is dead and over unless he makes an attempt to go to third.

Contreras beat this throw tonight but came off the bag due to momentm and he's out. It would've been a homer in 20 parks and he ends up with a single and an out.

Look at this link.  Almost all of these slides are runners hitting the bag initially and then sliding off and called out.  They should be outs.  If the rule was that play becomes dead when runner hits the base, it would make little sense for these guys to be called safe.  Note particularly Cespedes slide at 2:15.  Also, what if ump badly misses the call on these plays and calls safe?  Need replay for that.  So, how do you write the rule?

Watching a number of those slides, my own sense is that some were so clearly off the bag (well past the bag etc) they should be called out, while others were so minimally so briefly off the bag that they should not have been called out. But that probably underscores the problem of having any nuanced rule to allow for variation. Too bad.

Replay isn't the problem.  Slow motion is the problem.  Calls get reversed because things are seen in slow motion that the umpire misses in real time.

I have no solution, but we have special rules here and there.  Home plate can't be blocked. (Anymore)  You can overrun first base.  (Out only if you make a move toward second.)  I would hate to see a rule that you can overrun second and third as long as you don't make a move toward the next base.   They claim that the new bigger bases will help, but I don't see it.

Probably best to keep the rule as it is and put more effort into teaching proper sliding technique.  Perhaps not allow a fielder to make contact with the runner in a way that moves him off the base.

I thought they were crazy to call up Quiroz, and he still has almost no chance to be with the team next year.  But I have been surprised by his performance, both offensively and defensively, since joining the team.

Agree.  He seems to have a high baseball IQ and is making the most of his opportunity.

You are surprised by what a solid AAA player does during 9 games and 30 PAs in the majors?

We just saw Frank Schwindel put up a 1002 OPS during 239 PAs—joining about a million other SSS flukes in MLB history.

The explanation for Quiroz is clear:

That’s Baseball!

And, once in a while with a SSS fluke, he turns into The Real Thing.

And we know why this happens:

That’s Baseball!

Neither Quiroz nor Schwindel had anything to lose…they were long past prospect status.

Get your chance and go balls out…and what happens, happens…

Yes, that is baseball.  Since you are the repository of all baseball wisdom, when was the last time that a 30 year old rookie hit 108 points higher in his first 30 at bats in the majors than he did in the minors?
