Yes, that is baseball.  Since you are the repository of all baseball wisdom, when was the last time that a 30 year old rookie hit 108 points higher in his first 30 at bats in the majors than he did in the minors?

You just defined (and emphasized) what fluke means.

That was  exactly my point. So, thanks. No baseball wisdom necessary.

The thing that confuses me about the Contreras play is why it's scored a single and not a double.  He reached second base safely the moment his hand hit the base; he came off the base an instant *after* that, *beyond* the base, so shouldn't it be a double with him being put out trying to take the next base?  He's *past* second base.

I don't believe you are considered to have reached the base safely if you are tagged out after over-sliding or coming off the base.

That seems illogical to me.  If you're running (not sliding) and you run over second base and are tagged from behind by the fielder, isn't it a double with you being out trying for a triple?  But if you have a double but over-*slide* the base, the moment you get tagged *after oversliding*, your two-base hit turns back into a one-base hit?

Also I see Wesneski just got out of a one-out bases loaded situation to keep the Phillies' lead at 1; nice job.

Strike zone is a little one sided, it appears…Nola getting everything, and Wesneski getting nothing…

Hoerner scores on a fielder's choice to tie it, and Morel hits a three-run homer to give the Cubs a 4-1 lead.

Leiter is coming in for Wesneski, who only threw 85 pitches over 5 innings. After that upset of de Grom by Assad a while back, it would be great for Wesneski to beat Nola today.  Our rookies sure can pitch.

With a fielder's choice scoring Schwarber, Alzolay is coming in and has a 6.43 ERA but a WHIP of only 0.86: of the six baserunners he has allowed in seven innings of work, five have scored.  Unlucky.

But he gets the Cubs through the inning with no further damage.  Still 4-2.

Hughes, increasingly Ross's go-to guy in the late innings, strikes Vierling and Schwarber out to end another threat.

If the Cubs can hold on here, they will be 5-0 against the Phillies this year so far.

Rodriguez wraps it up.  Nice work.  I'd like to see what he could do with a full healthy season.

Another win today (2-0 this time; 3-inning save from Keegan), and with it the Cubs have swept the 6-game season series from Philadelphia.

Phillies protesting the game on grounds that it’s not an official game if Hughes doesn’t pitch.
