The tank is not working very well.  If it was today, we'd be 12th in ping-pong balls.

Question:  The lottery will only apply for the first half of the first round, correct?  If the Cubs, for hypothetical example, got the first pick, they'd still be picking 12th or 13th in rounds 2-20, correct?

Cubs muster three hits but still win their 10th of 11.

Cincy has two Farmers but only one Steer.  Not very efficient.

Alzolay 6 swing-and-misses on his 18 sliders.

Three perfect innings.

Yeah, I watched his innings, he looked really sharp.  Promising.

I'm a Rodriguez optimist, but he was unable to close the save, walking a guy with two outs and getting pulled.  At least today, he didn't command his offspeed.  Threw several fastballs that just missed, hitter laid off, and ump didn't give him any breaks on a couple that were an inch high.

I really like his fastball, though.  It's both fast and it seems to have a lot of movement.  I think he can probably get away throwing fastballs most of the time, his velocity/movement is so good.  But *if* he could hypothetically also get his breaking ball over with reasonable consistency, he might hypothetically become really effective.

Think he's got a chance to be an integral part of a winning bullpen.

I’m a bit less optimistic about Rodriguez.

Just seems like hitters are pretty comfortable against him. Has thrown 132 pitches in September and has 12 swing and misses. Kind of okay but blah. Estrada has thrown 117 pitches with 21 swing and misses.

Think that a 1-inning power reliever these days should miss more bats. Just seems a a bit short on stuff, aside from velocity, for this type of reliever who’s not a command guy.

But, yes, he should be in 2023 mix. Need to give him opportunities to see what he can do going forward.

That's helpful and makes sense, reb.  Helpful data.

I think his breaking ball has been inadequate.  I've watched only like 3-4 of his appearances, but it seems like often the breaking ball has functioned as a giveaway pitch?  He hasn't thrown enough of them for strikes to make hitters swing; and many of them have missed so badly that hitters aren't even tempted to chase?  To be a long-term guy, that needs to improve.

I think Hottovy and the some of the pitchers have gotten improvements.  So I'm interested to see whether they can tweak something to get a more functional breaking pitch that will be more tempting.

Yet another victory; a convincing one this time.  Looks like Stroman will end the year one game under .500.

JD, looking at Joey Votto in the Reds' broadcast booth...

"Kind of looks like Franco Harris."

This is an example of why JD is much better than Dempster, Sutcliffe, Glanville, et al.

The Cubs' winning streak comes to an end as the Reds stave off a 100-loss season with their win.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them sweep us so they can avoid that ignominy; they've got to be pretty motivated.  And even if they do that, the Cubs will end the season winning... 12 of 16?
