Then dont make the mistake the Nats made and trade him in his last year.

Or sign him now.

Chatwood with a 2-out walk and HR in the first.  Hits one guy in the second.  Cubs score 8 in the second, initially off Bumgarner, including a couple of infield singles, Bote HBP and removed from game, hope he's OK, a couple of bases-loaded walks.

I turned it on late, but the broadcasters say that Bote was hit in the head with a fastball.  No reports so far.

Chatwood today: 4.5 BB/9

Fixed.

The report is that Bote managed to turn his head so the ball hit the back of his helmet.  This is supposed to be the best way to receive a hit to the head.  He will be watched and evaluated, but concussion is not expected.

Bryant is universally loved. He can gtfo with this twitter BS and proving the “haters” wrong.

I think maybe he was reading Chris's posts last summer.

I listened to parts of yesterday's game.

WEbster pitched two quick innings.  The one fastball for which they reported velocity, they said 94.

Maples had a 1-2-3 inning I believe, but I think both of his K's were on full-counts with bad hitters chasing sliders.  Might pitch the same inning against big-leaguers and we'd be saying "man, he's walked two out of three, he's too wild, get him out of there...."?

Len and Coomer seemed favorably impressed with Mekkes.  He walked one guy, and I think went to full count on another before K'ing him.  Not sure if they were more interested in him because he looked more impressive than some of the other guys; or whether perhaps they were just more interested because they'd never seen him before, combined with his fascinating stats line, plus of course being so big.

Mekkes may be one of those big, tall unicorn guys who employs his height, wingspan, odd delivery and drive off the mound to make a 90mph FB play like 98 (e.g. Chris Young of Padres a few years ago).

Some guys just consistently outperform their measurables for a while though, eventually, MLB hitters tend to catch up.

Mekkes may never gain enough command to really succeed at the MLB level, but he is VERY interesting, at least partly because his minor league results have been so consistently eye-popping.

Yeah, I'm really optimistic that he'll end up becoming an effective guy.  Between Mekkes, Alzolay, maybe Lange, maybe even one of the big arm wildmen like Norwood or Maples, I'm optimistic that they can get some effective free service from some farm guys.

As with all things Cubs bullpen, control seems to be a problem for Mekkes, and command even less likely.  His control isn't AS bad as Maples or Norwood, though.  So we'll see how consistent he can get.

I also kind of like to see unusual guys succeed, with his size and delivery/deception.  Also like to see Midwest guys succeed for the Cubs.  He's from a small town outside of Grand Rapids where I went to college.  (Urban growth might have now encircled Jenison by now, beats me.)

If I like unusual human-interest success-stories, Allen Webster would be one (**IF** he was able to have the "success" requisite!).  He had a 24K/3BB ratio in Cubs minors last year.  He was a top-100 prospect 3 straight winters in BA, years ago.  Would be fun to have him bounce back and succeed.

I assume it's trickier/harder for that to work out than with options guys like Mekkes and Alzolay.  Even **IF** Webster was to impress at Iowa, without options you can't yo-yo.  Alzolay you could bring up for a couple of weeks, like what you see, but then send him back down once an injured guy is back.

The Cubs have split squad games today.  The Padres are at Sloan Park and the other group is at LA.

The game with the Dodgers is available on MLB.tv

I wonder if this style of providing the lineup will replace the “scoreboard” method that was used last year.
