Conteras two-run, inside-the-park home run -- but Angels scorer calls it a double and two-base error (on kick of ball as he came up short trying to catch it in the gap)

Addison Russell is crushing the baseball today.

Bote just missed a two run HR, ruled foul...though where it landed, I can't see how it could have been foul.

A better view of Willson Contreras' inside-the-park-homer:

Carl Edwards mostly abandoned the toe tap on his delivery today. Tried it once and almost fell down.

Another well-hit opposite field hit for Schwarber (a double) today. If he can do that this season, he’s going to hit for average compared to his recent history.

Scored a double for Contreras and an error on Trout.

Cubs win, 4-1.  Strop gave up the 1 run.  But Q with 3 good 1-hit innings.
Brach pitched an inning.
Chatwood finished with 3 shutout innings.  1K/0BB.  Only 1 K, but only two balls hit out of the infield, one a flyout and one a single.  Two groundball singles, two double plays.  Seemed to have decent control (I was just listening on radio, so who knows).

Pretty happy for that guy so far, that would be such a great human interest story if he turned into a functional, useful reliever for the Cubs.  Obviously a little easier to throw strikes on a relaxed March day facing KC minor-leaguers, versus facing Yelich or the Cardinals in a tight game.  But so far so good.

Chatwood has the most innings pitcher for the Cubs thus far.  I think that makes sense, try to get his confidence and rhythm re-established.  So if there's anybody who would benefit from innings this camp, it would be him.  I suppose guys like Webster and Maples might be next on that list, both of whom have also been quite busy thus far.  So I like the Maddon/Hottovy thinking on that stuff thus far.

I wonder who does plan out the usage; would that be Maddon or Hottovy, I wonder?

Would be interesting to see how wild Chatwood was last spring. I couldn't find it anywhere.

It should be Hottovy for the most part, and I get the feeling that Maddon is not a micro-manager in general.

Chatwood walked 11 in 21-2/3.

0 BBs in 6 IP in his last 2 appearances is certainly encouraging.

Everything is different when the pressure is on, of course.  And when it's in your mind that you've lost your radar before, I've got to think that the day location isn't clicking, that all of those doubts might perhaps instantly be waiting to spring out and take over, regardless of some spring training innings.

On the other hand, the mound is the same height and distance in Mesa as it in Wrigley.  If a guy has the mechanics to keep the ball in the zone in camp, there's no real reason why he shouldn't also have the mechanics to keep the ball in the zone in season.  I think that's perhaps especially true for Chatwood, given that his natural movement and wildness almost unintentionally keeps hitters guessing, and he doesn't need to have great location.

I think the most important aspect of fixing a mechanical flaw is if you can use it when things go awry. If it works in pressure situations when you feel a little out of sorts. Then confidence soars and those breakdowns happen less and less often.
