Giambrone got schooled by Marco Gonzalez on consecutive change ups, but hit the ball hard on 2-2 pitch to ground out and drove in a run.

Almora now has hit the ball HARD twice in 3 ABs and has a double and a single.

Cubs have 11 hits off Gonzalez in 3.2 innings and now lead 6-2.  Rizzo 3-3.

ben, yep - it just goes to show that all professional ballplayers can dominate other professional ballplayers within short samples.  What separates stars from scrubs is the frequency thereof.

Exactly, Jeff.  Nice to see Javy with a double (his 2nd hit) and Cubs' 12th in 3.2.

Too bad Marco Gonzalez isn't still in the Cards' rotation!

My son’s coach was a journeyman who spent parts of 5 seasons in the MLB. He said he could hit $250k pitches just fine but couldn’t hit the $10M pitchers.

Big difference when you move up to the bigs.

That's SO true, Chgojhawk!   Your son's coach was probably the best of the best at EVERY level until he got to MLB - the guys at that level are just ridiculously good!

Part of what's also tricky at the MLB level is projecting the human components for Team chemistry, too, because so many other Teams also have GREAT players.  It's another reason I'm so glad we still have Theo (and we have a World Championship)!  He's SO many levels downfield from the very best fans!

Not that our leaders are going to make all the right decisions - NO way - but he sure gets a lot more right than most other MLB execs.  We are very lucky to still have Theo!

Alec Mills (back) was scratched as today's starter.  I hope it is nothing long-lasting.  He'd be one of the prime candidates to come up from Iowa when the need arose.

Hoerner is having a nice spring...just tweeted by Len Kasper:

Make it 8 consecutive times on base for Hoerner: 1B/1B/3B/HBP/BB/HR/HBP/2B.

Our draft team may not be all that great at a lot of things beyond this, but at the very least they're good at evaluating first round worthy hitters.

I'd add that Cubs may have been the ONLY team that graded Hoerner as a 1st rounder, let alone a 1st-round hitter.

Virtually all the "experts" felt Hoerner lacked power and wouldn't grow into it, so they predicted he  would NOT be a 1st-round selection.

Who knows what the future will hold for Schwarber, Happ, Hoerner or others Theo/Jed/Jason have drafted R1, but they all do appear to have some serious upside as hitters.

If we add Baez, Bryant, Contreras (and, possibly, even Russell), there's an abundance of young hitting talent few teams have ever had in their systems...the early 60s Cubs had quite a bit, but not nearly as many as this group of young Cub hitters).

The super optimistic comp for Hoerner is Alex Bregman.

Actually, Hoerner is physically larger than Bregman.

Like Craig often points out, a very underrated component of power is the ability to make consistent, solid contact.

But can he sustain those numbers?

Sure, why can’t baseball have a .800 hitter?

I haven't checked the box scores every single day, but has Luke Hagerty pitched yet?  I would love to see him make it back.
