I would expect the rope to be very short here indeed.

97 and 98 on the first two pitches to Brinson, according to Statcast.

99 mph  drills Brinson in the thigh and takes out the home plate ump.

Now we get to see how the bullpen will implode.

Darvish was better tonight, but he still gave up 4 BB and a HBP to a team that has maybe three legitimate MLB hitters in the lineup. He has to throw more strikes. Like Chatwood at this time last year, you're not going to keep having 2 run outings when you're giving teams a free base runner about once an inning.

Contreras with a 420 foot homer to straight away CF. He's just killing the ball this year. He's looking like an MVP level hitter early.

Also, after getting HBP last time up, he really took his time going around the bases. Wouldn't be surprised if Mattingly took offense at that and he gets hit intentionally the next time he comes up.

Kyle Ryan with a 1 out walk in the 7th because the Cubs don't have a single pitcher who can just throw strikes.

Cishek hitting for himself in the 8th inning in a 4 run game against one of the worst teams in baseball? Does Maddon really have that little faith in his bullpen?

Good job by the front office ownership this offseason.

br, it's not Ricketts; it's Theo's fetish for scrapheap relievers.

The front office had something like $4 million to address a bullpen that needed 3 relievers this offseason. Theo's fetish for scrapheap relievers is a result of Ricketts cutting off the money to sign decent relievers.

Wrong.  Theo thinks he can build a bullpen with guys he found from a street tryout.  As far as the money is concerned, Theo has an unwarranted boner for starting pitchers he doesn't need.  Darvish.  Chatwood.

And I say this as a big Theo fanboy.

He needs to recalibrate the value of starters versus relievers.

If Theo had a budget of more than $6 million to sign Descalso and half a bullpen this offseason and he'd still loaded up on scrap heap guys, maybe I'd agree with you. And I've been on the "Chatwood was a dumb idea" train since the minute that contract was signed.

Contreras with another RBI hit. 7-2. With Strop still available and only 3 outs to go, I feel pretty good about the Cubs holding on tonight.
