Wow,nice series.  Great to sequence some excellent pitching outings, and to sequence some sustained good offense, and some low-drama wins.  Cubs have really been putting the runs up.  Nice outing for Hamels.

We'll see how it carries over against some major-league hitters, but getting a clean sweep sure helps.

Maddon loves his crazy shifts, but putting two guys in the same spot all the time is too much.

Why do you think they call him "the Magician"?

But, of course, I met Baez to second base.  When Russell was healthy, he was one of the best defensive shortstops in the league.

Cole Hamels in a Cubs uniform: 7-3, 2.46 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 8.5 K/9.

Willson Contreras is up to 1.0 fWAR, which already tops his mark (0.9) from last year.

It's only 10% of the season but Baez is ranked 11th in MLB in Fangraphs' advanced SS stats (tied with Andrelton Simmons).  He has more range and a much better arm than Russell (who ranked 13th last year), and he's only going to get better at SS if he's left along there long-term rather than moved around.  He's clearly in a very good place as a player right now - it makes no sense to change his situation dramatically by turning him into a utility player again.

Russell was hurt much of last year, as well as having other difficulties.  If he regains his physical and mental health, he will be the better shortstop.  But the keystone defense would be outstanding regardless of where the two played.

Yes it would, though I'm not convinced it would better enough to justify the lost offensive production it's likely to cause.

As you can see in the link below from 2015 thru 2018, Andrelton Simmons is far and away the premier defensive SS in MLB. So, obviously, looking at 1/10 of this season so far and ranking him #11 (with Baez) and trying to make a point about Baez with that stat is not a great use of statistics.

As you can also see from the link, since Russell came up in 2015, Russell is #2 in MLB behind Simmons at SS in Defensive Runs Saves (DRS). Even though he has significantly fewer innungs than superb defenders Lindor and Crawford (among others), Russell still has more DRS than they do. Aside from Simmons, there is a very strong case to be made that Russell is the premier defensive SS in baseball.

Russell is a better defensive SS than Baez, hands down.

On the other hand, I totally get the argument that Baez’ overall game is blossoming to such an extent that you just leave him alone and don’t change anything with him now, at SS. Have always believed that, with your premier, elite players, you put them where they give you the best value and where they thrive—-and work the lesser guys around that.

Russell is a better SS than Baez but obviously a lesser overall player now.

So, will be interesting to see how Cubs play this out. Don’t see Cubs moving Russell to 2B but maybe he becomes the utility guy with Baez getting more SS starts than Russell. Not crazy about moving Baez around at this point....but perhaps he is such an outlier guy that moving around has zero effect on him and he’s just as good no matter what you do with him.

So you think Baez will stop hitting if he plays some 2B?  I think his hitting would be unaffected.

I do see a certain logic in using Russell at 2nd, though.  Seems like 2B is a position that different guys of varying defensive capacity can share the position.  Descalzo?  Zobrist?  Bote? Russell? Any of them can play some 2B, even if they aren't all comparable defensively.  But none of those other guys belong at SS, just Javy and Russell.

Basically 2B can function as kind of a utility-guy spot;  SS maybe less so?

Given that we don't know whether Russell will hit enough to play very regularly, it may be best to just play him at the utility-guy spot?  We're not sure if he'll hit well enough to play as much as the best of Descalzo, Zo, or even Bote, are we?

I think Russell is the better defender. Russell is also a bad person who the Cubs would ideally dump on some other team before he plays another MLB game.

The Cubs should commit to Baez long term, and Russell should be gone as soon as possible. That means they should play Baez at shortstop, even if Russell is the better defender.

If Russell performs poorly offensively, he will not play very long.  If he returns to his rookie year production, he will help greatly.

If Russell can hit, he'll play some; if he doesn't, hopefully little.  He's a premium defender, which will be true at either 2B or SS.  If Russell and Baez are both playing, you'll get superb defense regardless of which play SS vs 2B.

Obviously Descalso won't stay on fire; but if the auto-out version of Russell shows up, it's going to be hard for his defensive to justify putting his bat into the lineup.

If Descalso stay as hot as he has been, he will play somewhere.  But there are a lot of places that Baez can play, including third base and probably either corner outfield spot.  If Russell is able to be an offensive force, it will be great for the Cubs.  I would much rather have too many good hitters than not enough of them.  Especially when you have fantastic flexibility from Baez and Zobrist.  And, of course, it would give the front office much more options in potential trades.

Dave, Russell is not going to be an offensive force, or a downright "good" hitter.  The question is where on the spectrum between almost-average and awful he might fall.
