I would try to go with 6 starters for a couple of months.  If Chatwood performs well, and none of the others fall off a cliff, we should be able to get a great return at the trade deadline for Hamels.

Dave, if you have six starters and all are performing well, including Chatwood and Yu, then they won't be getting any return at the trade deadline for any of them!  If you've got six starters all pitching well, Theo the Nowacrat isn't going to be trading any of them.  He's going to be keeping them all to chase a playoff spot.

Yu's trending in the right direction and it's critical for the success of the team this year and beyond that he succeed as a starter.

Agree.  Team success probably depends on Yu being successful.  Not sure that bodes well for team success, because that success seems perhaps more hypothetical than realistic.  But for teams with great outcomes, often that coincides with having good success from improbable players.

It's often reasoned that pitcher success is built on the big-three of K/BB/HR.  Yu's HR and BB profiles seem pretty ill-suited.

Bad command, no deception, and HR-factory is a kind of a risky recipe.

Given Darvish's performance history, I would not consider it "improbable" that he will yet be effective, even highly effective, this season.  Seems to me it could easily go either way.

In any event if the other starters pitch like they have recently (granted, that is a very large "if") I am not convinced a successfull season is necessarily dependent on Darvish getting back on track. Obviously success would be way more likely with Darvish pitching anywhere near his potential.

Hopefully, Epstein is not as much of a nowacrat as you seem to think.

But I was saying what I would do in that situation, not predicting what Epstein would do.

If by some freak you got Darvish pitching well and kept Chatwood pitching well in the rotation, trading a starter for an impact reliever would be a nowacrat move.  Since the bullpen is more likely than the rotation to be our downfall.

Darvish has a whole career of pitching well when healthy, and a few starts with us of pitching poorly.  It certainly isn't that unlikely that he'll figure it out.

Contreras is going to be toast by the time Caratini gets back.

If Joe's not going to use Davis, let Kyle be the emergency catcher and bring up another reliever.

It's crazy that pitchers are afraid to throw KB a 3-2 fastball.

Love Schwarber - he'll always be a Cubs legend - but he just can't hit.

Prefer Bote in the lineup.  Very sad.

Maybe, but that was one terrific change-up he got for strike three. Best pitch Maeda threw all inning.

Wow, what a clutch hit for Willson.  Unbelievable.  Descalzo, that extra run could be pretty huge, too.  Wow, really nice.
