Contreras was all in on hitting a homer in that AB. Didn't work out the way he wanted it to.

So, do we still have people arguing to move Baez off SS when Russell comes back?

What is different to cause anyone to change their mind?  Is there anyone that didn't already know that Baez was a good shortstop?  So is Russell.

Man, what a fun win.  Down 3-0, I sure didn't expect that.  Very fun.  Some really nice defense by the Cubs.

Not sure what the teams ahead of them did HR-wise tonight, but a 2-HR night might possibly bump the Cubs into the top-20 in HR's.  Nice!

Every day Baez looks more and more steady and proficient at SS, which further weakens the argument that Russell is some kind of big defensive improvement that would justify messing with Baez when he's performing at an MVP level.

Russell may not be a BIG defensive improvement, but he IS an improvement.  And there is no reason to believe that Baez will not show the same improvement at second base as he has at shortstop.  But regardless of which one plays shortstop, Playing them together in the middle infield will result in one of the better defensive duos in the game.

I remember some people saying that they thought Russell was just a hair better, but not a BIG improvement.  Besides, the argument I've been hearing is that the Cubs defense would be better if BOTH were in the lineup.

If your argument is that they’d be better with both of them in the lineup (which you would defensively, but offense kinda matters too) then it’s just as true with Javy at SS and Russell at second.

We’ve seen Baez improve massively as a hitter once he started playing every day. We’ve seen him improve massively at short once he stayed there. Is there any reason not to think that would continue?  The fact is you’d be wasting one of Baez’ best traits (his arm) at 2B.  And you’d be hiding Russell’s defensive weakness (also his arm).

Also - Baez is an automatic start every day and Russell is not (or at least he shouldn’t be).  If you put him back at SS, that means Baez has to move every day based on whether Russell plays or not.  Whereas if you leave Javy where he is, no extra moves required - Russell either plays 2B or sits.

Seriously, it’s astonishing that this is still even a matter of uncertainty.

The hate for my man Addi is thick in here.

Never seen such hate directed to someone over one episode.

Usually we give second chances in this country.

I bet everyone here has needed one before.

Well we're one back in the loss column from the Cardinals.

Really if Darvish gets his crap together, we're formidable.  Hopefully we're not too far away from that happening.

We're only as formidable as the bullpen lets us be.  It always seemed likely the rotation was going to be pretty good, but it won't be as good as it has been the past two weeks, realistically.

Who in the pen really inspires confidence right now?  Strop is throwing pretty well, not great.  Kintzler and Brach are well off their top velocity and Cishek looks like he could be spent.  The rest of them are all crapshoots, career mediocrities we're hoping will have career seasons.  When Chatwood is leading the staff in fastball velocity, that's not a great statement about having a shutdown bullpen.

Some way, somehow, a move has to be coming for an impact reliever of some sort.  Since it's not going to Morrow in the foreseeable future and Kimbrel is a pipe dream, it has to be a trade.

When Kris Bryant was hit on the shoulder in the bottom of the seventh (before Anthony Rizzo doubled him home) he pulled what looked like a black ace bandage out of his pocket and wrapped it around his right wrist as he reached first base.  Is there a problem there that we have not heard about?

Baez now (before today) leads all qualified SS in defensive runs saved above average (Rdrs) and Plus/Minus fielding runs above average.
