Almora with a 2 out homer in the 9th, 2-1 Dodgers.

Then Bote Ks on 3 pitches, Cubs lose. Too bad the bullpen had a mini-meltdown in the 8th that allowed the second run to score.

Albert can't hit RHP...

600 ABs, .694 OPS (plus minors)
1 AB, 5.000 OPS

Screw sample size!

You always hope for a sweep but two out of three against a team as good as the Dodgers isn't all that bad.

This harping on the bullpen is a bit over the top.  When we get deep into the season, it will likely again be the offense that is most concerning.  Not that the bullpen is all hunky dory, but it will be easier to shore up the bullpen than it will be to improve the offense.  I don't anticipate the offense falling off a cliff like last season, but consistent offense down the road remains my biggest concern.

I thought that Lester's outing was very encouraging (and important).

Or the media frenzy about him having to go back to utility player got into his head.
I wasn't serious.  I hope you're not either.  He lifted his eyes to check the runner and botched the pick-up.  It could have happened to a better shorstop.  Like Russell.  Or Theriot.   :)

Nah, not too serious... But I still think a flat declaration that he’s the SS, period would be a wise move. Why risk messing with him when things are going so well?  You never know what will throw a guy off his feed.

It’s so easy to fix the bullpen Theo has never been able to do it in 5 seasons of playoff contention...

I don’t disagree that the offense is a concern.  Heyward May be “fixed” but he’s still going to level off, and if God forbid he starts reverting to his 16-18 form the OF starts to look truly horrifying. You have to hope Rizzo, Bryant and Schwarber pick it up to counterbalance the probable regression of current overperformers.

From 2015-2019

Cubs bullpen 7th in fWAR, 4th in ERA, 5th in FIP, 5th K/9

Such a struggle to find an effective bullpen.

I know a lot of the Cubs difficulty this season has been placed on the pitching staff. Rightfully so.

But at what point do Madden and the offense start taking some fire. Bryant has done well in the last 10 games with his ba. But the power is absent.

If you take Bryant's aggregate stats from his return  from injury last year thru spring (yes they don't count) and this year... The overall pitcure is really troubling.

The issues w the offense are basically dependable mvp Bryant and his effects on the lineup vs the new not so mvp Bryant.

Cubs gave up a LOT of talent for financial flexibility during mvp Bryant's peak cost controlled years.... If that is not the Bryant they get... All of those other moves look terrible even if the individual risk assessment and eventual outcome on those moves is within expected error bars.

I do not think this version of the Cubs can be a WS contender without their "mookie or trout" aka mvp Bryant.

I also have zero faith in Madden it's like watching the train wreck he ran in tb all over again.

He got lucky in the WS that his shitty in game management was bailed out by just astoundingly great talent... But to me it's obvious his schtick is not working yet again. He is great at keeping young players loose and not getting drowned in the big moment. But he is a mediocre in game manager and his schtick runs hollow w vets over time.

Those are just mu thoughts on the Cubs as a non cubs but big baseball fan prespective.

Also, fun fact I'm sure Eloy will not be the prospect u regret losing those are going to be gleyber and cease.

Eloy will be a fine Carlos Lee level player... But not the prodigal hitter he was made our to be.... Hope I am wrong!

I share your concerns about the offense, but not about Maddon.  His handling of the bullpen during the WS certainly deserves criticism, but I don't see any evidence that the players are tuning him out or that his in game approach is weak. I agree that the pre-2018 Bryant is needed for the Cubs to be serious WS contenders, and I remain hopeful that we'll see that Bryant despite a slow April so far.

Bryant is simply too good to struggle all year, as is Rizzo. In the past week we have seen signs that point to them both breaking out of it. Bryant appears to be healthy, so I see no reason to believe he won't be the guy he was as the season wears on.  To think that with a 1-6 start where seemingly everything went wrong the Cubs now sit a few games out is very encouraging. I believe they have the best record in the NL, or close to it since that first week.

I'm still hung up on Maddon not walking a red-hot Christian Yelich to face Ryan Braun who was 6-29 vs Quintana in game 163 last year.
