Great win for the Cubs.  Kudos to Davis, Javy, and the pen.

Umpire Larry Vanover made the right call by not granting time to Jose Martinez leading of the ninth. That's the same move that Ryan Braun and a few others use on almost every pitch.  When you step into the box, you should be ready to hit.  Martinez erred by not being ready when he did not hear time called.

"The first 10 games of the season, it was everybody talking about us," Javier Báez said. "And now where’s everybody?"

CHICAGO -- Cubs second baseman Daniel Descalso has left the game against the St. Louis Cardinals because of a sore left ankle.

Descalso was hurt rounding first on a single in the first inning Saturday. He was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fourth.

Almora is not much of a hitter.

Don't let Joe Sheehan hear you say that.

Also, get greedy and finish the sweep tomorrow. Over the last two years, it seems like they’ve often come out flat in game three in these situations. It’s a chance to show the early season urgency they were talking about all offseason.

Jeez. The team is on a terrific run. But there's always a way to be grim after a really important win I guess.   ???

Nice job by Brach to K both Goldschmidt and DeJong. Still think Maddon should've stuck with Ryan there, though.

Genuinely curious why you think the proper strategy was to leave the lefty in to pitch to righty power hitters rather than bring in the righty? Goldschmidt, for one, has a career OPS over 1.000 against lefties. What’s the rationale? Trying to understand your point of view.

Another fun Cubs win.

Because Ryan had been good so far and Brach had been pretty bad. A platoon advantage doesn't matter if a guy can't throw strikes.

Ryan has shown no real platoon split in his small sample with the Cubs. Brach had walked 11 per 9 IP coming into today.  So I prefer a LHP who is currently performing vs. a struggling RHP.  Maddon brought in a guy who has been a real risk to beat himself to replace a guy who has probably earned a little trust.

By the way, Goldschmidt also has a career OPS of .900 vs. RHP, so he's not an easy out for anyone. And DeJong has no platoon split in his career (.820 vs. RHP; .816 vs. LHP).

Jeez. The team is on a terrific run. But there's always a way to be grim after a really important win I guess.   ???

Sorry, didn't mean to come across as grim. I actually meant to be kind of cheerleader-y. Finish off the sweep, show the killer instinct they had in 2016 that (IMO) has been missing the last two years. This is their best stretch 3+ week stretch since 2016, and I'm hoping they'll continue that tomorrow.

I think that Maddon is wary of riding a situational pitcher too much. Ryan pitched out of a high-stress 5th inning and then, for another inning, asking him to finish off heart of righty lineup coming up, including Goldschmidt, is asking for trouble. Goldschmidt vs Ryan is a match-up to avoid.

The strategic move is to bring in the righty there. If we want Ryan to continue to do well, you have to pick your spots with him. Pitch him when he’s most likely to do well.

Obviously, Brach is walking way too many guys but if you’re going to opt for a lefty there (who already has thrown a high-stress 15 pitches), then there’s no point having Brach on the club.

Interesting story lines for a game in early May.  A battle for first place between historic rivals.  And two accomplished starting pitchers who have pitched very well lately.  Great game for a national audience.  Bring the brooms.

That said, Almora is hitless in 8 career PA, so...
