Strike 1 called on a pitch way outside. Awful umpiring.

Willson waves at another awful pitch, probably because of that brutal call on the first pitch.

Strike 3, Cubs lose.

Big letdown after the Cardinals sweep.

Watching the play again, there was a bunch of action around the plate.  Base runner was probably in his peripheral vision, I think a batboy was clearing the area, Contreras was moving to cover, the ump was getting into position to make the call.  Ryan may have fooled himself into thinking he had no chance.  He did LOOK to the plate before spinning and throwing to Rizzo.

2016 Cubs would find a way to pull this game out. 2017-18 Cubs score a run and lose by a run after that really stupid play by Ryan.

Let's see what the 2019 Cubs do.

More 2017-18 than 2016 tonight.

Cubs facing pre-2017 Cubs Rule 5 pick Caleb Smith tonight. Was trying to make 2017 Cubs as a reliever, but returned to Yankees just prior to the season.

He has been really good in six starts this season.

This ump has a huge strike zone tonight. He’s missed at least 4 or 5 obvious balls tonight.

Lester is not at his best tonight. Hopefully he can get through 6.

Really sloppy defense tonight. Schwarber dropped a fly ball earlier; that runner ended up scoring. Heyward made an error. Baez was too non-chalant in this inning on a Castro grounder and Castro beat it out. Then a routine double play ball was hit to Bote, and he bobbled it...they only got one out.

And now the Cubs have Rojas caught stealing, but he turns around and goes back...and Rizzo is slow getting the tag down so he's safe.

Nice job by Lester to get through 6 innings on a day where he wasn't at his best and his defense gave him very little help. Tied at 2 going to the bottom of the 6th.

Caleb Smith looks pretty good.  The Cubs should have kept him when they had him.

Cubs have first and second, no outs in the 9th in a tie game. Descalso pinch hitting, then Almora and Bryant.

Descalso bunt. Looked like he had a pretty easy out at third, but went to first. Second and third, 1 out.

Almora with a weak grounder, Heyward out at home. Up to Bryant.
