Umpires don't have free frame photos. It just didn't look like a swing, even on replay.

It was a swing.

That wouldn't have mattered if the replay umpires had correctly overturned that play in the 6th. This was an really bad night for MLB umpiring. The Cubs overcame their first awful call, then lost because of their second awful call.

But if the Cubs had just scored the runs the Phillies gave them, they would've won easily.  The umpiring was awful, but the Cubs hitting was worse.

If Schwarber's was a swing this was too even on replay.  The Cubs let some runs go earlier in the game and the Phillies had some well placed hits.  On to the next game.

Behind only the Pads now in blown saves in the NL.

Brach throwing 96 is encouraging,  but if you wing it without a dominant reliever late in games, you’re going to lose some like this. Unfortunately they count just as much now as they do in September.

Yeah I agree, that was a borderline check swing from McCutchen at best.  The MLB Network guys all agreed he held up.

Coomer said it was definitely a swing and called it a “missed call.”

There is no freeze-frame photo reviews of check swings. If and when there is, then we'll have something. It's the hardest call in the sport and everyone needed a freeze-frame to determine if it was correct. I'd be more bothered by the missed call at 1st which could have been overturned but wasn't.

If you want to see how the check swing “rule” has changed, here is one of baseball’s historic ABs: a three run homer by Hal Smith in the eighth inning of game 7 of the 1960 WS that set the stage for the Maz walk-off homer an inning later.

At 39:20, you will see Smith go around and check almost 2/3 of the way around. Ball 2. Nobody says a peep about that being a strike. This was common for much of baseball history, I believe.

Once the base umps got involved, way too many strike calls, in my opinion, on checked swings. A pet peeve. No way today’s McCutchen AB should be a strike, in my opinion, but I’m sure similar checks get called a strike on occasion.

Here is the problem:

Quote from: Wikipedia
The Major League Baseball rulebook does not contain an official definition for a checked swing, but defines a swing as "an attempt to strike at the ball". It is the decision of the umpire as to whether an attempt was made or not. Generally, factors such as whether the bat passes the front of the plate or the batter pulls their wrists back are considered in the ruling. Some umpires prefer to use the "breaking the wrists" criterion as the method to decide a checked swing: if the wrists "rolled over", a swing occurred.
A year or so ago one umpire (Joe West?) said his definition was when the head of the bat crossed the foul line into fair territory.  That works for me.  It would be easy to see for the base ump.

We argue about how changes in rules and strategies have changed the game and screwed up stats and records today.  Use of the closer, use of multiple relievers, shifts, dead ball, live ball, etc, but over the years there have been rules that have increased stirke outs (base umpires calling checked swings), decreased strike outs (lowering the mound), and, sheesh, long long ago a pick off really was a pick off, because if you could hit the runner with the ball when he was off base, he was "picked off."   Bet there were a lot more brawls back then.

Now they're talking about moving the rubber back 6 inches.   I read an article that would actually help pitchers because many times the most vicious movement on the ball is after it crosses the plate.

On the broadcast they were talking about how next year, relievers would have to face 3 hitters.  Two I could understand.  Three will put some guys out of work.  Three will mean you will need several guys with closer stuff and mentality.  Three means you can't take a chance with wild people who have potential but are inconsistent.  Like Edwards.   Three may mean the manager will try to squeeze one more inning out of the starter, leading to a few more W's for starters.

As far as checked swings are concerned, there was a time when only the plate umpire called them...lots of arguments when that was true.

Note the one hour early ESPN game time
Another cold, damp, windy, and miserable night for a ballgame.

Morans in St. Louis.  Traffic is backing up around the stadium.  People are lining up outside.  Not at the Blues' game.  At Busch...the game was postponed 4 hours ago because of threatening weather.

I mean the only Cub fan that would show up for the game in this kind of weather is Ron.
