Nerris threw three ball-4's to Heyward; the ump turned the first one into a strike, but then Heyward swung at ball 4 on the next pitch, and the K-pitch wasn't anywhere even remotely close.  O well.

That was really a fun game.  Javy just missed on his deep flyout, I thought with the swing and the jump/angle off the bat it was maybe going to get out on TV.

If they'd allowed one fewer run, and been down only one instead of two, I'm pretty sure Contreras could have scored on Chatwood's double, too.

Lots of opportunities, great game to watch despite the outcome, once they started the scoring.

Tarp is on the field. No BP, but word is that Reds-Cubs should be able to start on time.

Statcast projected Schwarber's shot at 449 feet.

After his second PA today, Schwarber now over .800 OPS (.803).

Both Bryant and Rizzo OPSing higher than Baez.

Wow.  Based loaded for Schwarbs even after the Heyward caught-stealing.

The inning so far:  Single.  Caught-stealing.  Walk. Single.  Flyout.  Walk to Hendricks.

Cubs up 4-3 mid-6.  All but one of the runs via HR.

The Reds have so many frustrating hits today. Bloops, soft liners, and ground balls all over the place.

Cubs were up 4-0 after 3 innings, then the offense went to sleep. Now it's tied in the 7th.

Reds tie it up, back-to-back-to-back 2-out hits.  Almora's throw to 2nd might have gotten Winker but Russell cut it off.

Suarez had gotten a bloop single into right.  How does Heyward show up defensively these days?  He doesn't seem to have much speed, to my qualitative eye.  Surprised he couldn't run that one down, and there were a couple of high-hang-time balls yesterday too that I assumed he'd run under, but not quite fast enough.  Heh heh, I also assume that if Russell had been playing SS and Baez 2nd, Baez would have gotten out there for the bloop single that Russell wasn't as quick to catch.

Oh well, lets get some runs!

The Cubs are now 9 for 19 in save opportunities on the season. Only two teams have a worse pct.

Russell comes in a whiffs on a sinker that was almost going to hit him in the foot.  But why not swing?  I don't think I've seen him hit a ball hard yet in the AB's I've happened to see, which haven't been many.  But he looks about as helpless and confused now as he was last season.  Yesterday's game in the 9th inning, he took a fastball right down the middle in the 9th, before whiffing on another fairly ordinary-looking fastball.  Really struggling.

Too bad the Cubs are so thin, I think Russell could benefit from a longer stretch at Iowa to see if he could maybe get some AB's.

In both of Brach's innings, he got two quick outs then got in trouble. In the 7th, he ended up giving the tying run. In the 8th, Montgomery is coming in to try to bail him out--first and second, 2 out for Senzel.

There are times when Javy seems to commit himself to swinging for the fences before a pitch is even thrown.

It’s embarrassing to hear Cubs fans go nuts over a routine fly ball.
