The articles I've read, Deeg, is that now that it's dragged out this long, they won't be signed until after the draft.  It mentions both Kimbrel and Keuchel.

Ah, you meant generally - sorry, I thought you meant specifically with the Cubs.  Who aren't going to sign him, period, and a draft pick has nothing to do with that.

Im not sure the Cubs wont.

We didnt spend anything last offseason and they've shown to be serious contenders for a pennant with a little help.

Surely the Rickett's clan arent just gonna say "screw you we've already won one World Series" to Cub fans.

Dave Kaplan said yesterday that the money is definitely there to sign Kimbrel.

This isn't a factor yet, but it could be later

As of 2019, the July 31 Trade Deadline is the only trade deadline. Players may still be placed and claimed on outright waivers after July 31, but trades will no longer be permitted after that date.

If the Cubs aren’t paying Zobrist that is an extra $470,000/week he is out in addition to whatever money was saved for deadline trades.  That can get you to Kimbrel pretty quick, the question would be how effective is Kimbrel going to be with this long of a period off.

True.  If Kimbrel is willing to sign a one year contract (actually, 2/3 year contract.)  But I believe the reason he has not signed yet is the fact that he is asking for a very long multi-year contract, something that is even more dangerous for a relief pitcher than it is for a starter.

Is there reason to assume the Cubs are NOT paying Zobrist?  I don't know who either MLB union has, or what Zobrist's particular contract details.  But in a lot of work places, employees are allowed to take personal days under situations of family need.  And I believe in many other work places, employers allow employees that privilege even when they are not contractually required to do so, including sometimes not freezing salary.

Given how Theo has put top priority on employer/employee relations, on a supportive employer/employee culture, on supporting player families and stuff, I wonder whether Theo may still be paying Zobrist's full salary, even if it may not be contractually required.  I have no idea, and of course contracts and employment conditions for super-rich professional athletes are not like anything like my experience.  But I'm just curious whether Zobrists leave actually is freeing up any budget for relief help and bench help or not.

Darvish gets out of a first inning jam, but then 4-pitch walks the leadoff man in the second and follows it up with a HR.
2-0 Reds.

Tough deal playing from behind and wanting to win it during the bullpen innings.....

Ball jumps off Almora's bat and goes 415 to RC.

Again, a common theme in baseball now.
