Our DTs were shut down by arguably the best pair of OGs in the entire league.  Nicks and Evans were both Pro Bowlers last year I believe. It doesn't really matter how well Kreutz did or didn't play when he's got OGs of that size and talent covering for him.  I think it's fair to assume our DTs aren't going to face two OGs of that caliber every week so I'm hoping yesterday was an aberration as far as that goes.

So yeah, that was probably going to happen but then Peppers and Izzy needed to pick it up on the outside and that really didn't happen either.  End result, too much time for Brees resulting in his big and fast WRs getting a major advantage over our depleted secondary. That big TE of theirs (Graham) did damage as well.

I was just realizing this morning... all these things we're anguishing over today are the exact same things the Falcons fans must have been saying this time last week.  Terrible OL play, QB beat to hell, questionable playcalling, ineffective pass game, sloppy D, etc.  The Falcons fans thought they had the better team last week and we spanked them.  We thought the same thing going into this game, and got shown otherwise.

From Biggs of the Trib:

The analysis of six sacks in the second half starts with the play of the line and the play selection, but this wasn't man-on-man blocking being defeated. The Saints didn't have a one-man wrecking ball. New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams blitzed heavily, overmatching the Bears with more defenders than they could block. In those situations, the hot routes should be there.

Williams rolled the dice like he was in a C-A-S-I-N-O and Martz and Cutler never made him pay with anything other than dump-offs to Forte, who made a regular season career-high 10 receptions. You might recall Forte also made 10 catches in the NFC Championship Game last season. The results of that game and this one are proof that it's never good to have a back catching that many balls. Sure, it's a sign of a receiver with great hands and all that good stuff. More importantly, it's a sign the offense is broken and lacking wide receivers to make critical plays.

Against a blitz, the "hot routes" are almost invariably routes over the middle. Slants, crosses, etc.

After the Harper hit on Bennett our WRs had no interest in going over the middle, therefore Cutler was dead in the water except when he could find Forte.

I heard they've opened betting in Vegas as to which quarter Cutler gets carted off the field next Sunday.

Well not really, but it's not that far-fetched.

they were getting pressure on him - causing him to throw before he was ready most times... he was able to step up into the pocket on the deep pass to Devery Henderson was a thing of beauty - perfectly led him in full stride - fingertip catch - and that only happened ONCE in the game

That blows:

Bears first rounder Gabe Carimi dislocates knee

Getty ImagesChicago’s struggling offensive line will be without its first-round pick for a while.

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that right tackle Gabe Carimi has a dislocated knee.  At this point, the thought is that Carimi could miss roughly four weeks.

Carimi was known for his run blocking, but was settling into his pass protecting duties as well.  The Bears struggled badly to protect Jay Cutler on Sunday, especially in the second half after Carimi was hurt.

F-u-c-k!

That sounds like a lot more than a 4-week injury.

Marc Colombo, anyone?

This might be a really good time to switch Webb back over to the right side and gamb-le on OMG at LT.  At least then each player would be on the side where they have more experience.

Webb has been playing LT for a few preaseason games and 2 regular season games - why f*** with him.  What do you do when Carimi gets back?

Omiyale gets Matthews on Sunday - with a balanced game plan he should be OK.

Good thing we have a GM that appreciates the need for offensive line depth and has plenty in the pipeline.

I remember one of our OTs actually doing a pretty decent job on Matthews in the first regular season game last year.  But I think that guy was Shaffer, not Omiyale.  Not to mention I'm sure they'll flip Matthews over to Webb's side at least a few times on Sunday to see if they can get an advantage there...  much like we do with Peppers.

I get your point on not switching Webb to the right side for a few games and then back when Carimi returns...  but, I think Cutler is about one hard blindside hit away from being done for the season.  He's taken about a half-season's worth of abuse already and we're not even to Week 3.

That REALLY SUCKS that the best lineman we've got goes down in week two. Like we've got a whole corral to choose from. This year is screwed and that lands directly on Angelo. MAN I wish that sucker would get fired!!!  His TOTAL lack of ANY idea what the hell this team NEEDS year in and year out is in direct corellation to what we're seeing on the field. Tired of it....

Lovie and his staff will get fired before Angelo does. And even that probably happens only if we finish well below .500.

Unfortunately the GM gig is Angelo's as long as he wants it, I think.  With Ruskell aka Angelo 2.0 waiting patiently in the wings.

Oh brother.  We open the season with 3 NFC 2010 playoff teams and the season is already lost.

2011 Goal:  Make the playoffs - stay healthy - see what happens.

Wow...  the Packers are looking even smarter now for drafting Burnett.

This is a huge loss for them.

I think I would invert that, i.e.

Stay healthy. Make the playoffs. See what happens.

If you don't stay healthy, the playoffs probably aren't happening.
