Three Bears remain sidelined

Posted: 9/22/2011 3:28:00 PM

Receiver Earl Bennett (chest), tackle Gabe Carimi (knee) and safety Major Wright (head/neck) missed practice for a second straight day Thursday as the Bears continued to prepare for Sunday’s home game against the Packers.

"Major Wright is feeling better," said coach Lovie Smith. "We have a few hours still before game time, so hopefully we'll have him available to possibly play."

After being limited Wednesday, receiver Roy Williams (groin) worked out without restrictions Thursday. It appears that Williams will play Sunday after missing last weekend's game in New Orleans.

"He's a good football player," Smith said. "We'll need all of them this week against a great Packers team coming in here. Roy's made a lot of progress. It seems like he's ready to go."

In other injury news, running back Marion Barber (calf), safety Chris Harris (hamstring) and guard Lance Louis (ankle) were limited Thursday for the second consecutive day.

For the Packers, safety Nick Collins (neck), defensive end Mike Neal (knee) and linebacker Frank Zombo (shoulder) are out; linebacker Clay Matthews (quadriceps) and cornerback Charles Woodson (foot) did not practice for the second straight day; and defensive end Ryan Pickett (foot) and cornerback Tramon Williams (shoulder) were limited.

Does Kellen Davis has what it takes to block Clay Matthews?

In a word: No.

In two words:  @#^! no.

He can, however, present a nice big safety valve for Cutler when protection against the blitz breaks down.

Kellen has the size to block Matthews. I just dont believe he has the blocking skills to get the job done

Kellen has had a major blocking fail on a key pass play in each of the last two games. Against two guys nowhere near as good as Matthews.

So I don't see how he'd fare any better against Matthews.

How many times do you an opponent ask a TE to block Peppers?

Martz feels he can get a double inside with TE one on one blocking the end but what happens is that DE often times pressures or sacks the QB.   Most of the pressure this year has been from the outside, the inside guys for the most part of held up OK.

You can get away with that once in a while, maybe on a short route, but Martz does it too often.

Correct. Chipping a DE and then running a short to intermediate route on a 3-step drop is not too much to ask of an NFL TE and that is well within Kellen's capabilities.

OTOH, I doubt there is a single TE in the league that can block a premier pass rushing DE 1-on-1 in a 5- or 7-step drop situation. It's just not going to happen.

Maybe that's why Martz' contract was not renewed?

Watch Martz ruin Cutler to the point that when we get an OC with a clue in here next year, Cutler will be a shell of his former self (see Marc Bulger), and we'll have to start over at QB as well.

Meanwhile, Tribune reports that our starting safety tandem for Sunday will be...  Steltz and Merriwether.  We are so screwed.

Good opportunity to see what we have in Steltz and I'm not sure Major Wright has been ruled out.  He might not start but he may play.  Game time decision.  Chris Harris is iffy.

Good news is that Roy Williams will play not so sure of Louis and Barber.

We've seen in past years what we have in Steltz at S, and it's not good.  Probably better than throwing Clueless Conte out there again, though.

My bigger concern is that Steltz is one of our key ST guys and if he has to play D as well that could come back to bite us on coverage.  Especially with that Cobb kid the Packers have now.

I'm hesitant to even watch this game. We're not even near full strength and going against the prior SB winners. We're so undermanned thanks to Angie's lack of football knowledge and draft comprehension. I think it's gonna be a train wreck.....hate to say it but I don't need my blood pressure skyrocketing when I see more inept line play and recievers getting bounced around like pinballs and Cutler looking like a bobble head out there thanks to the hits he'll be taking....don't know if I wanna see that again...
