Finally, I'm not so sure I like this "no frills" defense that just plays straight up with no strategy.

The only way that approach works is you have good to great talent at every position on the defense.

We clearly do not, especially in the D-Backfield.

This is just the latest example of Lovie & Co. thinking their players are a lot better than they actually are.

you have to get pressure and make the O make mistakes in order for this defense to work.
If you don't get pressure (no rush or quick throws) or the O doesn't make mistakes or the D doesn't capitalize on the mistakes (missed sacks, ints) or the D misses tackles, you lose.

Just once I would like to see Julius Peppers dominate a top-tier OT...  or hell, even a 2nd tier OT.

The last time he really took a guy to school for an entire game was Bryant McKinnie and that's been a few years ago already.

It seems like he plays up or down to the level of his competition. There's no reason he shouldn't be putting up 2 and 3 sacks against some of the scrub tackles we've faced so far (Streif, Newhouse, etc.).

Look at how Jared Allen and Brian Robison dominated the Lions OTs and you see how it's supposed to be done.  Peppers is either getting old or isn't quite in shape yet or is picking his spots. He's playing OK, but you don't pay $90 million just to get "OK".

JJ "dislocated kneecap" remember? Columbo was YEARS before he got into playing shape again. Carmni - eh I hope not. Betcha the Bears could run a hell of alot better with him in. I'm at a loss why the Bears keep what seems like 10,000 DL and like 4 OL on the roster. Astoundingly blind.

Carimi suffered the same injury during offseason at Wisconsin - they are talking like he could be back as early as 2 weeks or a late as 4 more weeks.

Most teams only have 8 or 9 offensive lineman on the team simply because they rarely sub them out during the game.   You need more defensive lineman because you sub them out more frequently.  Bears typically play 4 DTs and 3 DEs.

I wonder when Wooten gets his shot as the 3rd DE - Reed was kind of quiet against the Pack.

I was a bit disappointed the Bears weren't able to get more pressure vs Newhouse too.

The Saints LT and Clifton are pro bowl quality but then so is Peppers.   All the Bears pass rushers seemed like they were stuck in mud Sunday.

Bears run a passive defense which by design tires itself out during the course of a game.

I am kind of rooting for the Panthers this coming Sunday.  I know it sounds crazy, but I would actually like to see Ron Rivera come in and light up the Bears, with his rookie QB.  They had some quotes from him on the radio yesterday, he said basically after the super bowl Lovie just didnt want him any more.  And when he went to the Chargers as LB coach he got a pay raise.  He flat out said because it was Chicago it was going to mean much more than any other game.  Nice to hear some honesty from a coach.

It doesn't sound crazy...it is crazy.  Bears need a win.

Bears were tired of Rivera interviewing for a HC job year after year.  I give him credit though, not too long ago he took a volunteer position with the Eagles as an assistant to their LB coach.

I agree,  it is a distraction that your DC is interviewing for HC jobs every year.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Bears lost again on Sunday.

Rivera will have the Panthers jacked sky high. We only have three games of pro film on Cam Newton and he's got enough skills to slip our pass rush (assuming we can get any). Their RBs are rock solid and their OL is better than people give them credit for.  Their D isn't as strong as in years past but it doesn't take a very good D to shut down our offense as we've seen the past two weeks.

Also, we beat the Panthers last year despite playing horrendously (Todd Collins 4 INTs) and I'm sure a lot of this year's Panthers who were involved in that game were extremely embarrassed by that.

I could see Greg Olsen having a huge day, cause that's what ex-Bears tend to do to us (see Cedric Benson).

Rather than talk of subtracting talent we should be talking about adding it.

Agreed.  Folks hating on the receivers I don't understand.   If Knox wouldn't have dropped his pass does that mean the Bears were going to beat the Packers?   I wouldn't mind keeping what we have at WR and get a real OC in here that can call plays.  Amazing how folks FORGOT Knox was a few yards from being the first WR that had 1000 yards receiving since Marty Booker but after 3 games a few folks don't want him around.  I'd rather have him than Williams.

Also an upgrade at the offensive line would help them as well because if Cutler is protected he would hit those guys downfield.

I like Knox and was upset as everyone else when he dropped that 20 yarder.  Aside from that drop he had a pretty good day with 4 catches for 84 yards.

I wasn't really crazy about the Roy Williams signing but we need to give the guy a chance.  Now that he's over the groin he needs to get some reps in with Jay and we'll see how that goes.

I thought that the lack of an offseason and a full training camp wouldn't hurt the Bears offense that much since they were coming back with the same OC, the same system, the same QB and most of the same receivers.

Clearly I was wrong.  The offense looked OK against a Falcons team we caught napping, but they've been completely out of sync ever since.

True, but Webb was moved to LT from RT.  Garza was the RG and now he's the center.   Lance Louis played RG last season for about 3 games and his replacement at RG for the last couple games was the center...for the Seahawks.  And Carimi was in college....playing on the other side.  Omiyale played 14 or 15 games as the LT now he's been subbing at RT.

And our 2 TEs that took most the snaps last season are gone...

But aside from that everything else is about the same on offense...

Oh I do. I understand well. If the Bears roster had 10 more receivers on it and 10 less defensive lineman on it the offensive production would still be the same. The receiver quality is crap.
