Royals pound Cubs 13-4

MESA, Ariz. (AP) Melky Cabrera hit a bases-loaded triple in a five-run first inning and the Kansas City Royals coasted to a 13-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

The Royals jumped on right-hander Matt Garza, making his second start and third spring appearance after being acquired from Tampa Bay on Jan. 8.

Garza gave up six runs and four hits, walked four and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.

Cabrera also had a double to lead off the fifth and scored on a double by Alex Gordon, who had three hits.

Left-hander Bruce Chen gave up two runs and three hits, walked three and struck out four in four innings for Kansas City. Chen thought he was going to pitch only three innings, but was given an extra inning by manager Ned Yost because of a low pitch count.

Marlon Byrd had two hits, including a two-out, solo home run in the third inning for the Cubs. He has multi-hit games in six of his eight games.

At Mariners

RF Fukudome
CF Johnson
2B Moore
LF Montanez
1B LaHair
3B Vitters
C Castillo
SS Barney
P Garza

The Cubs used a DH yesterday in an NL park (Diamondbacks) but are not going with one today in an AL park.  As Bob Brenly said Sunday, they must want Garza to get some at bats.

Eric Patterson has a wind-aided triple off the wall.  Poorly played by Perez.

Orlando Hudson grounds to second, 2 outs.

The Padres are going to be interesting to watch this year.  Losing Adrian Gonzalez hurts their offense a lot, but their lineup is much, much deeper this year.

Pena Ks.

Baker singles off the righty Harang.  He might be close to winning the second base job outright...he's been great this spring.

I thought this Perez was supposed to be a defensive wiz out there.

He must've studied defensive wizardry with Koyie Hill.

I hope the Cubs aren't fooled by Baker's stats this Spring.

He's never been able to hit righties.
