They can use the franchise tag again but the price goes up.  They won't do that.  They will give him a fair offer and if he doesn't accept they will use the transition tag.

I am not sure they can use the transition tag now.

In the Q&A in the trib this morning, Biggs answers this question.  I think the trib must have some protection on the ol click and copy, but the answer is yes, the Bears could transition him.  Biggs doesn't think it is a good idea, but he goes right away to what it will cost - same as the franchise tag.  While I can't disagree with that, what I think it does do is allow a free market on Jeffrey while it also allows us the opportunity to match.  I think in this scenario, it better allows Jeffrey to go out and set his market, and as we have seen in years past there are teams that are not afraid to get creative with those poison pill contracts.  With him having that ability, while it is not a truly free scenario, it is not the franchise tag and no one is offering us two 1st round choices for him.

In this scenario, if the Bears are truly interested in retaining him, then they offer him a fair contract with a decent bonus, but he doesn't blow up the market and become the highest paid wide WR.  But if I were the Bears, I would also include some lucrative incentives that could bump the contract up to that higher level based on his performance and availability to play.  A fair contract with the opportunity to touch the top tier, or sign with another team and we have a chance to match.  I believe if all is said and done and he doesn't sign a contract with us or another team, then we have the decision to enforce the transition tag or release him to the market.  I think it is a better decision all around.

I believe those creative poison pill contract offers were outlawed in the last CBA.

Give him a contract PERIOD.     You can do less years...more incentives...whatever.   Just do it.

If Jeffery leaves that safety that often doubled him now goes over to Cameron Meridith's side of the field...maybe.  Unless you think they are going to double Josh Bellamy and Kevin White.

We got cap...we don't have a lot of draft choices.   Sign your best players...draft new ones...and use free agency to fill the gaps.

Jeffery doesn't have a chronic injury and he isn't a drug addict and he's just turning 27....what is so hard about this?

Yeah I cannot understand this Jeffery situation at all. Get the thing done already! Why make a hole where it doesn't exist? The guy is a player. Get something done. Do we need to take another reciever high?! I sure as heck hope not! There are needs on this team going unfilled-the entire secondary comes to mind-and having to pick another wideout would just tick me off....fix the secondary already!

Other than QB Jeffery is the biggest questionmark Pace has to deal with. IMHO Jeffery isn't worth the franchise tag and White is a bust. We need a lot of receiving help. Just saying to be saying.
