Wouldn't it be a great story if somehow he could come back?

The Bears re-signed tight end Zach Miller on Monday and the contract was structured so that Miller would get some money even if he wasn’t able to return to action after last season’s severe knee injury.

On Tuesday, the Bears confirmed that Miller won’t be returning to action this season. They placed Miller on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which shuts him down for the season while he continues to work his way back from an injury that required nine operations.

Under the terms of the deal that Miller signed Monday, he’ll receive $458,000 in salary this year. He would have made $790,000 if he’d been able to play.

Miller, who entered the league as a Jaguars sixth-round pick in 2009, spent the last three seasons with the Bears. He has 146 catches for 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns for his career.

It's a very kind hearted thing for the organization to do for Miller.  If he were to be able to return in 2019, not sure how old he'd be or if Burton flourishes, he is then redundant and older.  Time will tell on that one.

I wonder if he is able to be on the sidelines with that designation, and if they want him coaching the tight ends at all - I would imagine they have  a coach for that.

PUP defined:  Players on the PUP list may participate in team meetings, and take advantage of the training and medical facilities, but cannot practice with the team.

He could probably act as an adviser to the TEs but he has no formal training as a coach, and the Bears have a TE coach.

Given the seriousness of the injury and his age I'd bet his playing days are over but he just seems like a very determined guy.  You never know.

Miller is a guy who is super positive and will never give up.  A good presence in the facility.  I’m just wondering, not being cynical....since he got injured as a Bear, would the Bears have to pay for him to rehab, as in an injury settlement?  I know he wasn’t under contract, and it’s well established that the Bears did something they “didn’t have to do.” Is it money coming out of one pile that would have been coming out of another?  Any “business sense” to this at all?  I’m wondering because you never see this...

I am pretty sure the Bears were not under any obligation since his contract was up.  Just a good thing to do.

Now we get to wait 6 weeks, and hope nobody does anything stupid....

He was under contract when he was injured.   I'd bet there is some sort of health insurance policy that covers the surgery and rehab costs.  Workers comp.

What the Bears did with the contract was above and beyond that.  Basically, gave him a salary for 2018.

3-4 ILB is kind of like guard.  You can get by with a serviceable guy but a really good player will stand out.   They are generally not playmakers.

Kwiatowski would be fine as the #2 ILB on the team.  Solid guy and he showed he could blitz.   I think he used to be a safety in HS maybe college.

The issue I have is why we drafted Iyiegbuniwe kid in round 4 after taking Smith in R1.  We already have Trevathan.  This Iyiegbuniwe kid must have just been head and shoulders above the need picks, namely OLB and CB.

Bears have the best 3-4 ILBs in the NFL and potentially the worst 3-4 OLBs.

I wouldnt count on Trevethan making it a whole season healthy, that is why they drafted Iggy is my guess.
