What's wrong with Alex Smith for awhile?

Alex couldn't even finish a few games this year before his calf locked up on him.  No thank you.  I would be surprised if anyone signed him for more than a backup coach.  My wife is a huge WFT fan so I watched all their games as well as all the Bears games.

I think they should just get someone in the draft unless some FA comes cheap. They'll overpay in FA for anyone above Alex Smith.

So what do you suggest?

1.  Draft the best players available (as long as one of them is a top offensive tackle).

2.  Sign a reasonably priced FA like Winston or a trade for a Minshew.

3.  Lose.  Get a top  draft pick in 2022.

Dallas - That's ugly.  Who is the top 3 FA QBs right now?  I would put Trubisky near the top of the list, and less 1) he doesn't want to come back or 2) Nagy is too prideful to go with him.  All the names being mentioned do not inspire unless you are getting Carr, Watson, or Wilson.

I would like Pace to trade up to number 2 and draft Wilson.  I mean Pace did it once before right?  Of course I dont think Zach would save Pace or Nagy this year.  They are in a tough spot.

There's a little bit of difference in trading to #2 when you have the 3rd pick vs the 20th pick.

But based on what I've heard talked about for what it would take to get Wilson/Watson its probably along the same lines.   Big difference is a #2 pick probably doesn't effect the cap as much as one of the veteran QBs.

Other difference is that you aren’t sure what you’re getting with the #2 pick. You know what you’re getting with Wilson/Watson.

I don’t see how the Bears are even in any trade considerations for Watson or Wilson.

Giving the pick 20 and presumably later first rousers in later years doesn’t help them get their next franchise QB.

But what would we do with Speed Bump Charlie????

Orlando Brown wants to play left tackle and he knows that his chances of doing so with the Ravens are nil as long as Ronnie Stanley is healthy, so he asked for a trade last month to a team that will put him in that spot on a full-time basis.

The Ravens say they’ll do what’s best for the team and they have granted Brown and his agents permission to talk to teams about a deal. Brown told Mike Garafolo of NFL Media that there are “ongoing conversations” with six teams about a deal and that a new contract — Brown is heading into the final year of his rookie deal — would be part of the package.

Brown played left tackle before going to Baltimore and said his father Orlando, who also played for the Ravens, told him not to “settle for playing right tackle.” As a result, Brown said his desire is “a lot more emotional or spiritual” than simply about football matters.

“It’s a situation where Baltimore knows my plan isn’t to play right tackle,” Brown said. “I feel more comfortable on the left side. That’s where I had played my whole life. I’m a better left tackle than right tackle. . . . It’s been my goal to be a starting left tackle in this league. To be presented with the opportunity realistically, it’s hard for me to turn something like that down.”

Any deal Brown and his agents are able to work out will have to pass muster with the Ravens, so there’s still some pieces to fall into place. Garafolo reports all parties believe something will come together, however, and that may lead to Brown going on the move sooner rather than later.

Yeah I posted that about a month ago.

It would work for the Bears except for the new contract.  A last year of his rookie contract would open options but right now the Bears have no money and any restructuring money looks like it’s needed for a QB.

Still the idea of a starting LT for maybe a second round pick is worth looking at.

Bears re-sign Cairo Santos.  5 years 16 million.  Final two years are voidable.

Santos had the best season of any Bear in 2020.  Given the cap situation, I don't know that O'Donnell will be as fortunate.

This is interesting:

https://bearswire.usatoday.com/2021/03/11/chicago-bears-2021-adjusted-salary-cap-carryover/?utm_source=bearswire&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=pos3headline&env=2ea40eed43933273faeccdc9b0fba543451bcacdda6eb0f39e86c517461b1e2c

Where things stand, the Bears are currently around $23 million over the cap, according to Spotrac. Which means general manager Ryan Pace has plenty of work to do ahead of the start of the new league year.

Thats going to cause a lot of problems. And what has been said here about how the Bears shouldnt be talking about trading for Watson or Wilson is graphicly real.

Mack, jackson and whitehair all get restructured.  Frees up 23 million.
We'll probably hear about fuller and Hicks soon.
