But Jeremiah says that good teams are built in the 2nd round.  So that defeats the purpose of acquiring 2nd round picks.

It all depends on the scouts grades for the players they are targeting.   There may be equal value with guys picked in the top of the 3rd round - who knows?

I don't know what Jeremiah meant by the that statement.  Your top QBs - first round.  Top LTs - first round.   Top pass rushers - first round.

Jeremiah says many GM’s want “more bites at the apple “ meaning you’ll find more good players if you get more picks in the top 100 than having 1 first round pick.

Partially true.  GMs that usually trade down don't value the players available at their pick in the first round and are willing to trade down for more picks later.

But to say that this is a well known strategy is not true.  You don't see any GMs doing this year in and year out just giving up on their 1st rounder for subsequent picks in later rounds.  If they do a first round trade down its because their draft board dictates it.  Otherwise saying you want more bites at the apple shows a disrespect for your scouting staff.  Later rounds it makes more sense since at that point the draft is more of a crap shoot.

But remember that for every team that is trading down there is a team trading up.

Would you make this series of trades?

1-1 to Indianapolis for 1-4, 2-35, 3-79, a 2024 1st, and a 2025 2nd

1-4 to Carolina for 1-9 and 2-39

Yes, although I would like to get more from Carolina.  Getting that potentially high 2024 1st to move down is key and Irsay just might be insane enough to pull the trigger.

Now I did read some mock article somewhere that had the Bears trade with Houston AND Indy, and at 4, both Anderson and Carter were gone.  doh, how Bears would that be???

I would like to get Brian Burns in the Carolina trade.

Carter and Anderson both gone at 4 would mean Houston drafted one rather than trade back.  Or someone traded up for them.

Seems impossible

And so it seems that nothing is impossible. The intercessor is the Cardinals @ 3. Its why trading down with the Colts is risky. Hopefully Poles is more careful. Personally I hope the Bears stop @#2 or even trade down to#3 with the Cardinals

Cardinals at #3 are taking Anderson or Carter.    Anyone at #1 or #2 will be taking QB - unless somehow the Bears really really want one of the 2 d-lineman and don't do a trade down with anybody besides Houston.

I would think at #4 Anderson or Carter should be available.

I know it's all a crap shoot, but when we talk about D lineman (for the Bears) in the first round, I right away flash back TO Spellman and Thierry.. It's time to turn this thing around. I was watching clips of the 80's Bears, man have we been lacking since..

Thats why you want to trade down no farther than 3 not 4. You open the door for one of the big defensive players

I dont care about 1 or 2 being QBs.

Why would the Cards want to trade up from 3?  Trade ups are not cheap and the Cards have their "franchise" QB.  They got to believe QBs go 1 and 2 and at 3 they get their pick of d-lineman.

If the Bears execute the double trade down or even a single trade down and end up with the Colts #4, maybe the Cards would entertain Bears to trade up to get their  #3 and have the choice of the 2 d-lineman.

You just dont get it. I have seen mocks of them taking Carter @ 3. If thats the player the Bears want or desire then you dont want to go below #2

It all depends on what they can get in a particular trade down.

Well duh.  Everyone knows that the Cards are taking a d-lineman at 3, so yes the Bears could get left with sloppy seconds - either Carter or Anderson if they trade down to 4.

Both players are highly rated - both players fill a huge need.  If Bears trade down to 4 that's the risk they have to accept.

And, if we happen to get blown away by an offer to move down from 4…say to the 9-10 range, there are some great edge rushers in that area, and some really good DTs that should be available high in the 2nd round.
