Cassel traded to the Cowboys

Posted by Mike Florio on September 22, 2015, 6:38 PM EDT

Matt Cassel

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday morning you won’t see a more gifted passer than Brandon Weeden. But Jones is apparently willing to look at whether to let his eyes wander.

With limited options in free agency and no apparent interest in signing Christian Ponder, Josh Johnson, or Matt Flynn (all of whom worked out for the Cowboys on Tuesday), Dallas has acquired Matt Cassel from the Bills.

Buffalo dumped Cassel and his $4 million-plus base salary before the start of the season, re-signing him for $2 million. Whatever the Bills received, it was enough to persuade them to go with Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel as their two main options.

Cassel’s arrival necessarily puts a little heat on Weeden, as Rodney Harrison noted during the final moments of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN. That could rattle the guy whom Jones praised, causing the former first-rounder of the Browns to look over his shoulder instead of focusing on the task at hand.

Either way, it’s Weeden and Cassel until Tony Romo returns from a broken collarbone — or until Weeden or Cassel are injured or dumped.

UPDATE 7:02 p.m. ET: PFT has confirmed that the trade is done.

Claussen as a backup is OK.  As a starter long term...nope.

Some article I read the other day said that now Fox is reunited with his old QB from Carolina...where do they come up with this crap?

Wouldn't that just be bizarre if they did go get Grossman, lol......hey, the kid got us to the big dance. Couldn't hold on to the football to save his life, but hey....lol

 Sporty ,

I'm tired of us kicking ourselves in the balls going up against an 0-2 team.

Might as well get used to it, JJ. We are the NFL's punching bag this season.....anyone can come up and take their shots and we just take the beating. We are the low guy on the totem pole....where the dogs come along and whizz...

If it's any consolation both the teams that beat us are undefeated and we're playoff teams last year.  And up next is the NFC's SB participant.

Bears just need to take their lumps Sunday, then get Cutler and Jeffery back and win a game.

I'm getting tired of being in an ornery mood on Sundays...and so is my family.

I didn't even expect to have any shot at a win until the Raiders.  I think some of your expectations were to high.

I suspect the team will get better as the season goes on and we might even feel a bit optimistic about next season by week 16.  Well at least I keep telling myself that.

Um, because Jarred Allen is going to start playing better?  My hope is they sit him MUCH more and let anyone else play....

My wife is proud of me that I haven't been getting angry after Bears losses. Last year I was super ticked at the way they played. This year I went into the season expecting very little so I'm not surprised when it happens. I just tell her they have not got the horses to compete so to expect that somehow they will is ridiculous. It still isn't easy to see them get beat like a drum and this weekend will be no different. I don't want to watch but I do want to watch. Silly, really. Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment.... I do still have Notre Dame and they're doing very well, so that's kept me sane so far....

While ND has been successful I haven't been satisfied they are unbeatable. To me they have been very "lucky".
