John Grabow and Tom Gorzellany had almost been blanked from my memory!  Josh Harrison bringing them back....

Heh heh, reminder that while an unimproved roster will be flawed, this still won't be like the Grabow/Gorzellany era.....

One veteran market reader today predicted a larger-than-usual number of non-tenders at the end of this month. With free agent volume so high, adding more players to the market could depress prices even more and drive players to accept what in the past would've been subpar deals.--Passan

Seems like a good time to jump in early.

Mets might trade Syndergaard, but not for prospects? That sounds...not smart.

Mark Feinsand @Feinsand
Breaking: Kurt Suzuki has agreed to a two-year deal with the Nationals.

It'll be interesting to see how much he gets. He was an attractive candidate for the Cubs backup catcher, but I bet he'll get significantly more money and playing time than the Cubs can give him.

2 years, $10 million for Suzuki. I think he’s clearly the best of the backup catcher types on the market, so someone like Rivera or Maldonado should be very affordable.

Suzuki has averaged about 80 starts per season the last few seasons, so probably was inevitably going to sign as a co-starting catcher somewhere.

Cubs can’t offer that kind of playing time, so maybe will be on lookout for more of a backup-type.

Brian McCann might be a fit. Had a poor season in 2018 but hit in the .750 OPS range previous three seasons and started 55 games in that poor 2018 season, so might be fine at starting even fewer games in 2019. Very respected, good clubhouse guy. Maybe could OPS near .700?—which would be fine.

If Cubs added McCann and McCutchen—-that would be a good clubhouse move, if nothing else.

Put me down for McCann - he would be a great addition.

First really big move of the offseason...from Passan on Twitter:

Source: James Paxton has been traded to the New York Yankees.

Full Paxton trade:

Yankees PR Dept. @YankeesPR
Trade: The Yankees have acquired LHP James Paxton from Seattle in exchange for LHP Justus Sheffield, RHP Erik Swanson and OF Dom Thompson-Williams.

Several of the national writers have tweeted since the trade that it's likely the Mariners are focused on 2021 and beyond now and would be looking to deal anyone who wouldn't fit that timeline. If they can work out the money, I still think Jean Segura is a good fit for the Cubs. Colome too, but he's also making too much for the Cubs to take without some money/a bad contract being involved.

Just curious, have there been rumblings that the clubhouse is unhappy?  I think we can surmise to an extent that some view the clubhouse as complacent, but I didn't think there was tension.

On balance, the return seems about right.  Paxton is a stud but has an injury history, 2 years of team control.  Sheffield is a legit top-50 guy, Swanson and Thompson-Williams are lottery tickets but not total non-prospects.

This would seem to confirm that the fire sale is on in Seattle.
