McGowin called back up by Nats; Oviedo called back up by Cardinals...

Will be a ton of pressure on these guys and their front offices come August, as this race comes down to the wire.

Well, Strasburg and Flaherty both on IL, so they might get a little longer stay this time...

Yeah, let others focus on those Strasburg and Flaherty guys.

We can focus on McGowin and Oviedo.

Carlos Martinez with 10 earned runs against him in Dodgers big first inning.

Faced 12 batters before being pulled with two outs.

Guess that Cards really, really wanted him to finish the inning.

On Cardinal talk shows, Martinez gets the most hate call ins.  Cardinal fans were counting heavily on Mikalos and Flaherty, so losing 2 or 3 at home to the Cubs put most of them on suicide watch.  They are using their best non-Flaherty starter as the closer right now because the rest of their pen sucketh.

From the Athletic:

Should MLB go back to a 15-day injured list? — Anthony F.

I often find myself going back and forth on this question. In a lot of ways a 15-day IL makes more sense. Players are forced to take more time when recovering from an injury, which is often a good thing from a medical perspective. Ten days isn’t usually quite enough time when coming back from something like a minor hamstring strain, and those extra five days can make a big difference. It also prevents teams from abusing the IL when a player is out of options and can’t be sent down to the minors. Teams were much more hesitant to use the IL to manipulate their roster, especially with pitchers.

On the flip side, the 10-day IL has its advantages because teams are less likely to try to hold a guy out for a few days and hope they can recover. If it’s a minor injury, there is a big difference between a guy being forced to miss 10 days vs. 15 days. Ten days doesn’t sound so bad, so teams may take a more cautious approach and place them on the IL.

Ultimately, I think the 15-day IL was slightly better and made more sense from a medical perspective, but I see both sides here

I don't think I've ever seen so many DL's for oblique strain.   Seems like years ago, with the 15 day DL, players sat a day or two and tried to play through it.  I recall as few as two years ago, people still asked, "What's that?"  Now half the guys on the DL have an oblique strain.

I disagree with the author's logic.  That a player might be better off being out for 15 days than 10 doesn't drive the argument, because the 10-day designation doesn't preclude that.

I like the added flexibility of the 10-day, for the reason the author mentioned: that holding a variably injured guy on the roster for a few days (it might not be very bad and he might not need 15 days) is less motivating.  I think short-rostering a team doesn't help teams, or player health.  I also think the 10-day is good for fans and for minor-leaguers.  Even if it's only for 10 days, it's fun for fans to get a glimpse at prospects that might become relevant players later, and I suspect it's good for prospects to experience big-league life, even if for only 10 days.  Plus it's good for prospects to get even a window of opportunity.
