Are the Rays going with their old school multi-colored uniforms this season?  Sure hope so!

Dear God…I just flipped over to the Cards/Jays game, and I had forgotten that Chippy was their new PBP guy…

And the sad thing is he’s probably an improvement over the guy he replaced…

He got drilled directly in the kneecap by a Hicks fastball…a better defender might have caught it cleanly…

Pirates tie Cubs for first place with a win today.

WP was Rob Z, his first win since he was a Cub.

Pirates #3 and #4 hitters turn 37 this year. Nice rebuild.

Cards bullpen gives up 4 runs in last two innings and lose to Jays in a throw-back-the-clock 3:38.

The games are going a lot faster, but aside from the rule changes, it seems like the strikeouts piling up quickly is a part of the increased speed of the game, which isn't totally helping with the entertainment value of the game.  Of course, most every team's best pitcher was going yesterday, so it makes sense the K's were getting racked up.  Still, the strikeouts are still a problem that needs to be addressed at some point.

I will say watching ground balls make it through some holes in the infield instead of being gobbled up by a perfectly positioned third infielder on one side of the diamond was a nice change yesterday.

To some degree, that faster games make it a little harder for me to do a retrospective watch on mlb.com.  Last year innings were so long, that I was pretty good at being able to click somewhere in a stream and hit an inning versus commercial.  Now, the innings are so short that the odds of clicking on baseball versus commercial break isn't as high!  And they don't let you just click-forward from the commercials.

JR, I don't think any of these rule changes are likely to impact the dominance of the K.  Unless they lower the mound or move the mound back, I think pitchers will just continue to make good pitches and K lots of hitters.  I suppose robo-ump might help that a little bit, if hitters didn't need to expand their zone to protect themselves against expanded strike zones.

Yeah I think moving the mound back is going to have to be the next step with this.  We're getting quick innings, but between the Cubs-Brewers and doing some light watching of Angels-A's and Padres-Rockies, we still need some action packed innings that aren't loaded up on K's.

Cubs had only 5 K's, that wasn't bad at all.  Brewers had 12.

Which is a reminder, we often think of how modest the Cubs hitting might be.  But there are a lot of teams that could have a lot of trouble scoring runs, the Brewers among them.  I'm pretty glad the NL at least adopted the DH to reduce some auto-outs.

As you say, a lot of premier pitchers on opening day.  And not sure how many games were cold-weather impacted, but every April we see hitting is REALLY tough in a place like Wrigley.  Starting in March doesn't help.

Perhaps it will time a little time but teams may realize that with the shift rules and promotion of base stealing that hitters with contact ability have enhanced value.  That might mitigate the K problem without the need for changing the distance between the rubber and the plate.
