The Athletic projects Soto to get 622 million.

They project Burnes to get 247.

They project Bregman and Alonso anywhere from 185-204.

They project Tanner Scott to get 60.

They project Blake Snell to get 105.

All of those together add up to about 615 million.

Let somebody else have Soto.

Better to get the Hall of Fame level player who is still in diapers. These guys do not come around very often.

If the Cubs were to get Soto, Seiya would become expendable.  You might be able to include him in a trade for pitching.

From Bleacher Nation:

"But the much larger benefit is the enormous profit the Dodgers are making via sponsorship and marketing opportunities. Two Asian airlines alone sponsor the Dodgers, the LA Times reported. Word is, the club’s profit is actually many times the cost to them of Ohtani’s record contract."

I don't think Ohtani was ever going to play anywhere but LA, but this was always going to be the obvious outcome of his contract: wherever he signed, his new team stood to reap enormous financial benefit from sponsorships, ticket sales, and global fan engagement.

Soto doesn't bring Japanese airline sponsorships with him, but the effect will be similar to whatever team signs him: whoever wins the Soto sweepstakes will see a significant portion of his contract covered on 2ndary effects, to say nothing of his performance on the field.

We're not going to sign him, but any Cubs front office official talking about smart spending or lux tax or anything else like that as a reason for not signing Soto is lying through their teeth and insulting your intelligence.

They're not going to sign Soto because winning is not Ricketts' primary goal.

If you sign Soto, I wouldn't get rid of the next best hitter on team.  They are really good a finding undervalued pitchers that can produce.  Just do that.

I'd started watching the Netflix documentary on the Red Sox.  It is weird than both Ricketts and Henry after breaking curses and being aggressive are now just really trying anymore.  Did Theo break them?

If you get Soto, Seiya has no position.  i doubt he's ready to become a full time DH.

If you get Soto, you have a 26 year old player who is on pace to be an inner circle Hall of Famer. I'm not that concerned about where Suzuki will play if the Cubs sign (arguably) the best hitter in baseball.

My point was that you not only get Soto but you also have the opportunity to include Seiya in a deal for pitching.

Play, I don’t see the logic here. You get a new best hitter, that means you get rid of the old one? Seems to me having as many good hitters as you can get is the way to go. The Yankees didn’t dump Judge when they signed Soto, and the Dodgers didn’t dump Freeman when they signed Ohtani.

Seiya was already on his way to being a full-time DH last year, so I don’t see a positional issue (and if there was you’d resolve it, given that Seiya was indeed our best hitter). Soto and Happ can DH a couple times a week and Seiya can play the OF on those days.

Of course this is all utterly moot, as there’s zero chance the Cubs are even able to fake being players for Soto.

I wish more Cub fans were willing to go to war for their team like that Yankee fan did last night with Mookie Betts.

He should have threw a beer on him too.

Every now and then, Dusty feels a need to remind us exactly who he is (in case we've foregotten).
