With Willson Contreras is moving to first base, let the record show that the Cardinals spent $87.5 million in a five-year deal for him and in his first two years, St. Louis bought into his defense exactly zero months. A monster mistake for a team restrained in its spending.

I still think letting Willson go was the biggest mistake from the last core. Rizzo, Baez, and Bryant all appeared to be heading into decline and/or unable to stay healthy in their last year or two with the Cubs. Schwarber just hadn't shown any real consistency at the MLB level before they let him walk, and the universal DH wasn't in place yet. But Willson was still good (and coming off his best MLB season according to fWAR).

It's ridiculous how these West Coast teams get pipelines to the best Japanese players.

He has to come out of a teams IFA budget.  If it isn’t the Dodgers, the Padres just cleared $4 million because one of their prospects faked his age.

Wow, crazy.  Why didn't he/they wait longer? 

Why didn't Ohtani? Sasaki wants to play in the majors ASAP, he wants to play for the Dodgers. He's betting he'll stay healthy and sign a monster deal in a few years. If he were eligible for it he'd certainly get more than Yamamoto right now.
